The skinny on 2013 14 week OS Plans

Hey folks.

I took a two month break from EN and am just returning.  I will be joining the Janaury OS starting Monday.  When entering my plan, I was surprised to see the OS down to 14 weeks vs. 20.  Not too unhappy about this, but looking for the best explanation from RnP or the WSMs for the rationale and any adjustments those of us used to the 20 week plans should make.

Thanks,

Scott

  • I don't have all your answers but I will say this, don't think you're getting a vacation. There is some hard work coming at you. I think the duration was taken down to 14 weeks because of the number of folks who got burnt out by the 20 week plan. This also now gives you the opportunity to put in an extra focused plan after your OS plan & rest week.
  • It's pretty simple. Almost everyone makes it through the 14 weeks in pretty good shape, but a lot of people had trouble making any more gains after that and/or burned out...whether from "overachieving" during the first part or from too much add-ons when the weather started gettting better or whatever.... It just seemed like a very large percentage of people would make better use of their time with getting almost all the gains in 14 weeks, then taking a little break, then hitting the next segment of their season. I'm sure there is a more sophisticated answer than that, but if you followed the "what I did today" forums in the past, they really tailed off those last few weeks.
  •  What WJ said. In addition, shortening the plan to 14wks allows people to either do:

    • A block of the single sport focus plans, or...
    • A block of the Get Faster plan, which I typically use when I need to transition / bridge the gap for someone between the end of the OS and the start of their A-race training plan. For example, OS --> GF --> IM plan
  • Excellent, thanks to all.
