race distance/timing pre-IM advice sought

Hi, my A race this year is IMLP (7/28).  Rich suggested I add a few races leading up to it.  However, I'm not sure what distance and timing makes the most sense.

I am also limited by the number of early season races in my area.  Here are my choices:

April 28th - sprint distance duathon (will do)

May 19th - I have a choice of doing a sprint, olympic or HIM  (Harriman St Park sprint or Black Bear olympic or HIM)

June 30th - HIM  (Mossman in CT)

Any thoughts on which, if any, I should do?

Thanks in advance!

Leslie

  • My 2¢:

Do the du, and do an Oly in May. NO on the HIM end of June ... WAY too close, your time is better spent doing a race rehearsal of 6 hours/1 hour biking and running.

  • Leslie - x2 on what Al says regarding the HIM end of June -- too close to IMLP.  For your May race, in addition to making a decision about which distance to race (personally, i'd probably opt for HIM, but there's plenty of value in doing the Oly), another factor to consider is which race best simulates the conditions you'll encounter during your IM.  E.g., IMLP has some nice hills on the bike, so Black Bear, which also has some nice hills, would be a good course to test how you manage your effort etc. under such conditions.

  • Not to pile on for the sake of piling on, but I "third" the advice to not do the HIM in June. For the May race, I would lean towards the Oly or Sprint...depends on how it will fit in with your IM training plan. Personally, I would choose the Sprint so you can get some VO2 work, and still be able to do the longer weekend rides.

    Besides, Sprints are FUN!
  • Hi Leslie!

What about Rev3 Quassy? It's a EN focus race for 2013, it's hilly, and a LOT of EN'ers and IMLP'ers will be there. I'm doing it, and so is my husband John, and we're both doing IMLP. It's on June 2nd....
  • Thank you all for the great feedback.  It seem unanimous so...I plan to take your advice.

Regarding Quassy Rev3, for some reason that was not on my radar.  I will definitely check it out.  It would be great to meet some of you in person.

Much appreciated folks.  Have a good night..
