Butt Kicking - Repeat or Continue?

I just finished OS week 6. The 2nd Saturday OS workout (run 60min) went well but the coupling of the morning ride and the afternoon run kicked my butt. So much so that I ended up skipping the Sunday workout altogether. I'm not ill or anything but needless to say I was pretty spent. Feeling better today and ready to go for tomorrow morning's bike - the first workout day in OS week 7.  Just curious if this is normal or if I'm just not in shape enough to move onto OS Week 7.

  • @Jim, your sunday run is more important than Sat...in the future i'd dial that Sat run down (or OFF) to make sure Sunday happens!!
  •  Thanks Patrick. I'll look at skipping the 2nd Saturday run or use the "brick" timing. I need the running so I'd like to keep it in the mix.

  • I had to dial back my brick run just a little bit on the back part. Definitely want/need a good run on Sunday.

  • In the OS, I don't do the longer run on Saturday. I either do it as a brick or do the run on Friday, for the very reason noted in the original post - I want to have a chance to get in a good long run on Sunday.

When it comes time to do the race prep plans, either for HIM or IM, we are asked to do back-to-back Sat and Sun rides of 4+ and 3 hours. I will more often than not switch that Sunday ride back into the weekdays, trading it with, say, an interval or tempo run which I then do on Sunday.

Bacl-to-back running or biking is a fast route to longer term fatigue for me. I try to do max of 3 or 4 runs or bikes a week, and avoid doing either back-to-back if I can. Since consistency in doing the workouts is a real key to my success, I switch things up so I can get the work done an a regular basis. I don't know if this is an age thing, as I never trained like this before age 50, but it works for me.

  • Like Al, I usually skip the Saturday run so I can have a quality run on Sunday.  If I do run on Sat, it is just the short brick version, and never more than 3 miles @ Z1 or Z2 pace with a few 30" strides.  I'll do it as a brick simply as a convenience, get it done, hit the shower and get on with my day.
