Coach Rich's Swim Clinic Notes

PnI are tag teaming the presentations for our series of AG seminar this winter, with me on the dime for the swim and bike stuff and some other...stuff.

I wrote out my notes for Patrick and he's creating the sides. I've posted my notes here in the Wiki.

Please read and then circle back to this forum thread to discuss or ask questions!

  • Very helpful.
    Again Thanks!!
  • well I have good technique according to the times you posted I actually thought I sucked.
  • Read it. One thought ... the De Soto swim tube (3/4 length neoprene suit for the legs) serves me well instead of a pull buoy while allowing a bit more natural kick with overheating in a real wet suit in the pool. I still use the PB at times.

  • For video, how about Ubersense?
  • Had a friend visit me who used to swim competively in HS and now 20 years later comes back to the pool not having swam in a year and kicks my butt. He critiqued my form and advised that I extend my reach by getting more shoulder rotation (which when watching Patrick's video and reading Rich's notes) this seems to be good advice. My friend also advised me that instead of slowly exhaling during stroke and then breathing instead to "hold my breath" to get more benefit for buoyancy and then to exhale right before turning head to get breath. Any thoughts? On a side note I'm a 1:12 IM swimmer looking to one day beat 1 hour.
  •  @Zane ... Your friend may not fully appreciate effort which might be required breathing like that for 70 minutes straight. Also, if you're doing a wetsuit swim, you've already got plenty of buoyancy.

  • Thanks so much, this is very helpful!
I also want to add how helpful having a video of yourself swimming is. People have given me swim advice before, but I've never really 'gotten it' until I could see what I really looked like in action. I bought a Lifeproof waterproof case for my iPhone, and a friend and I traded off shooting video of each other. The case is expensive relative to other phone cases, around $80, but it was a good purchase for me. I finally feel like I have a grip on what I need to fix and I'm excited to swim image
  • According to the times in the post, I need technique work. I am excited for Coach P's comments this coming weekend at the clinic, so I have guideance on how to specialize my technique work.
  •  @Al:  Thanks for the response.  Good point about wet suit and already providing bouancy.  I am a "finess/form" finatic and always tweeking my form  swimming and biking  trying to get "free energy/speed" when I can.  I love to swim and though I won't be cranking out heavy volumes during the OS, I'm not one of those that can stay out of the pool for the relaxing and stretching out it allows me.  I will experiment and compare the two styles of breathing and see where it goes.  Swimming with "full lungs" makes sense to me in pools without wet suits but then again will it disrupt the rhythm and effort and work against any added benefit? Off to the pool.

  •  @ Sarah:  Good point about swim video analysis

@ team:  has there been and could there be a way that if we could post a small segment video (say like 10 to 15 sec) of our swimming that it then could be open for critique and comment from the coaches and/or team?  Not that RnP are already busy or something image
