Training watch

Hi all,

I know the Garmin 910xt is the tool of choice for training but was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the Timex Ironman Global Trainer watch.  Is it a decent (that means cheaper) but effective alternative to the Garmin?

  • DC rainmaker has a couple of reviews. He says it is half the price of the 910xt! I love my 910xt, but for half the cost maybe the timex is worth a look?

  • I have the Timex and like it very much. Some will express that it is too large. It is a bit bigger (Timex is round) than the 910 xt (which is square), but not huge. It may look larger on a smaller wrist, but not a deal breaker. Many of the same features - I juggle this and a 910 xt between my partner and myself. It is less expensive - and is a great intro to high tech (in my humble opinion)
  • Disclaimer: I am a Garmin guy. I have the 205, 210, 610 and the 910. I also ride with a 500 and had a 705 before that. In the pool I use the Garmin Swim. So, I have a lot of experience with Garmin and find them easy to understand and to be very intuitive to use. My dad uses the Global Trainer and is always struggling to change a setting or get the right data fields. Ok, he is not a gadget guy. I must get it from my mom.

I tried to help him and was totally lost. It was just foreign to me. I am sure it is a good unit, but I was confused by it. I am also a Mac guy and panicked last week someone wanted me to do something on their Windows PC. Same thing I think here.
