Garmin GTU10 anyone?

Has anyone used the Garmin GTU10? I'm thinking about getting one as an alternative to trackmyathlete. Basically, it's a small GPS you can put in or on something to track it. I've wanted to  buy a trackmyathlete so I can track John while training and racing, but they've never put them for sale. DCRainmaker has a good review and update of the Garmin. • Hey Penny,

I have on of these that I bought in October. They are definitely down in price from when I bought mine. Amazon now has them for $121. If you read all of dcrainmakers review then i cant add a lot as his is very close to my thoughts. Here is my $.02:

    Pros:
    1. Works well as a tracker with good apps for iPhone and browser site.
    2. Small and compact, easy to clip to a race belt.
    3. Sstting up geofences is easy and straightforward.
    4. Alerts work well, when given time to update through the system.
    5. You can share a tracking link with others.

    Cons:
    1. If you don't get the setup of geofences right you won't get alerts, it takes time for the device to update.
    2. The link you can share is only good for five hours. Useless for iron distance tracking.
    3. The workaround for #2 is to have anyone you want tracking you download the app or log in to the site. You have to share your user ID/password to make that work.
    4. No downloadable tracking or ant+ syncing, that would make this a great device.

Bottom line, I would buy it again, especially at the current price. You can set up geofences with alerts on iron courses to get around the live tracking expiring after 5 hours. For training rides, etc, I really like it, my wife knows where I am, and has an accurate location to within 30 seconds,

  • I got one for Christmas and I really like it. I have not been able to ride with it, but I am such a big geek, I have been driving around with it through the normal course of my day to see how it works. It is pretty cool. I set up a geo fence around my house with a distance of about 20-30 minutes when riding my bike. It sends my wife an alert and lets her know when I am in bound. Typically when I ride on Saturday's, the whole gang is waiting for me to have lunch. This will give her a little pre-planning time to know I am inbound.

I also burn up the battery and have it set for frequent updates. She has the app on her phone with my account and password and check up on me when I am out riding.
  • I bought one last summer after three consecutive flats while on a training ride and my wife and daughter had to come rescue me. Used it for 2 HIM's and the Chicago marathon last season and my wife said it worked out great. I didn't share a link to the general public - this is only for my wife to know where I am while training and racing. She got the app on her phone and I entered the login info. I like the size, too. I think I stuck it in the back pocket of my tri top with no issues. I would recommend it.

If you have an iphone the "find my iphone" functionality does the same thing.  I put my iphone in a ziploc bag and take it cycling and on long runs and my wife can track me on her device or the family computer.
