Experience with the Garmin Forerunner 410

I'm looking for a GPS based watch for running that works with my Ant+ Heartstrap. It's also required that I can download the exercise data afterwards and I can plan and upload trainings to the watch so I decided to look out for another device from Garmin.

What do you think of the FR410? How accurate is "actual pace"?

Or maybe there are other devices that would do the job?

BTW I also want to use this device during racing

  • I have never used the 410, but I have heard that the touch bezel can be an issue for some. See this post from DCR for details: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/01/look-at-new-garmin-fr410-touch-bezel.html

I have the 210 and like it very much. It was relatively cheap, very easy to use and has a battery that allows you to just wear it as a watch when you want. The only draw back is limited data fields. Here are some details: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/12/garmin-forerunner-210-in-depth-review.html

If you really want to go for it, check out the 610. IMHO, it's the best. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/04/garmin-forerunner-610-in-depth-review.html

  •  Stefan - Dino pointed you in the right direction.  I don't have the 410, but I do have a 210 and 610.  The former is a solid running watch, but once you have a 610, I doubt you'd go back to the 210.  Just beware since you said that you want to use them during a race, that none of these are waterproof, so you'd have to put them on in t1 or t2. Garmin does make multisport watches that are for s+b+r: the 310 and 910, and the Timex GlobalTrainer is too, but these might be more 'watch' than you want.

  • I had the 410 yrs ago and got frustrated myself with the touch bezel and switched to the 310xt and was MUCH MUCH happier. It's even harder to use in the cold, or rain, or even while sweating which for me was basically 70% of all the running I did. The 310XT also picks up the sattelites faster than the 410 dis (and the 910 is even better).

The 210 is a nice ANT+ run watch, but if you want something that could double af a backup bike computer, the 310 might also be a better option. I like the quick release strap on the 310 (or 910), so for a triathlon you can wear the strap and have the head unit mounted on your bike, then when you're a couple of miles from the end of the bike leg you can snap it on your wrist and use it for the run. This gives you a much lower probability of having your watch end up on the bottom of a lake or river if it gets kicked off during a rough swim.

With that said, you can get a 410 on eBay for around $100, so that's not bad. A 310xt will run you around $215 on eBay. You're looking closer to $360-400 for a 910xt (which I upgraded to because I'm a gadget guy, but honestly I don't think it's all that much better than the 310xt if you don't use it for the swim stuff...)
  • Wow, Jess. You are starting to sound like John. image
  • Thx for all the infos ... I've read a lot of negative feedback of the 210 in terms of water getting inside the watch only by sweating and/or cold temperatures and that's for sure a NO-GO for me here in the alps image
All what you said leads me in the same direction I already was a few days ago -> 310xt or 910xt is the way to go image
I think I need to check eBay for these ... I think the 310xt is pretty cheap at the moment here as everybody is looking for the 910xt.

It's really bad that there's no device around from Garmin that fits a runners desires the same way the Edge 500 does with the cyclists! This is for sure the best device all around and I won't let mine go ever!!! image
  • It exists. It's called the 610, it's very expensive... FYI. I shower with both my 610 and 210 and have not had an issue. The problem is that they cannot be submerged for any significant period of time. I think their rating is IXP7? Or something similar. That translates to no more 30 minutes submerged and no more than 1 meter.
  • Um Dino... Don't tell Jess... I forgot to log her out earlier when I accidentally posted using her account. Good catch. Oops.
  • I have a 405 which is very similar to the 410 and has the touch-bezel. I've used it for almost 4 years and it's still going strong. I used to race with it (put it on in t2), but now I race with the 910xt. But I do all my run training with the 405.
  • I use the 410 and am actually fine with it. It isn't huge/bulky, and there's one important thing to note about the touch-bezel....you can lock it at any time so the bezel doesn't do anything. Then you just use the normal side buttons if you want to lap or start/stop. I've had no problems with satellite reception or anything.
