Jan OS 2013 WEEK 2- SOCIAL/MOJO Thread

Hi Jan OS crew,

Great to read about your lives. I hope you are feeling good after 1 full week of the program. I have really not even begun. I did the bike test  week 0 and then got one bike in during week 1 before the FLU hit. Now my daughter has it so I am knee deep in caring for her.  Still not back to work yet.  Will try an easy bike today and little run. Baby steps to get my body going again. Can't rush these things.

I have no idea how to upload pictures. I was going to try to upload a family pic but I can't figure it out. Help???

OK- let's keep the chit chat going. How about those Patriots and 49ers??? Maybe a Patriots/SF Super Bowl?? That would be awesome!!! I am a Pats fan and Steve a 49ers fan. That would be an awesome party.

  • Hi Carrie, and yes absolutely a Pats/49ers SB would be fantastic. Yesterday was not good for my friends who are stout Seahawks fans (given I am on Vancouver island Canada, Seattle is like our home team). I ran an 8k road race in the am while the game was being taped. Then we headed to said friends' place to snack and watch the game. Well, the PVR decided on a firmware upgrade and suffice it to say, those die-hard hawk fans never got to see the game even though a great comeback falling just short.

Interesting 4 remaining teams, 2 with animal names and 2 with human references.

    Bring on week 2.

  • This weekend was pathetic. I went 0-4 in my playoff choices! Just pathetic.

Now I'll go for battle of the birds in New Orleans - Atlanta vs Ravens.

I'm a born-and-raised Northern Californian but cannot stand the 49ers (or as I call them, the 40-whiners); altho I find myself silently cheering for Kaepernick. My dad is a lifetime fan, which was undoubtedly my "rebellion" against him - so the smack talk has been great. I'm actually a Colts fan, but now also like the Broncos because of Peyton's presence.

Any way, I'm already suffering from football withdrawals; no more MNF or ThNF, and soon no football at all! EEK! Good thing Cycling is starting up again!
  • I will root for the Patriots, as I am a transplant to Boston, by way of Pittsburgh (Go Steelers!) Not a fan of the Ravens, in any capacity. That said, I think the Pats are going to have their hands full this coming weekend - the Ravens are hungry and riding the Ray Lewis Train to Retirement. Can they pull it off in NE? It might happen. As for the 49ers - they played one of the most complete, well-rounded football games I have seen in a long time - and they look really tough to beat if they continue to play the way they played this past weekend. Initially, I didn't agree with moving Alex Smith (I was a big fan of his at Utah) - that said, Kaepernick has done a fantastic job driving the bus!
  •  I'm NovOS but always up for some MOJO...especially PATRIOTS MOJO!...

Take care of the Family & Flu Carrie!

  • representing the ATL!

Had a room full of high school kids over watching the game. I didn't watch the field goal attempt, just couldn't. So I turned my back to the TV and stared into my son's and his friend's faces to see the result. It was PRICELESS! At 15, they haven't seen this kind of thing happen very often, with this much on the line, and with their favorite team. Their eyes got so freakin' big when that ball went thru the uprights! Classic memory for me, so glad I watched them for that kick!

Falcons, scraping and clawing. It ain't pretty, just get the W. Respect? Everyone around here knows/accepts that history dictates respect and unless they win the Super Bowl, hell....probably need to win a few, there won't be any respect. What's cool is that their coach is real clear about that with his players...respect doesn't win ballgames, don't need respect, be better on O, be better on D, be better on specials.

If Kap plays like he did against GB, Falcons will be lucky to be close. But, that's why I watch these things, that's why you play the game, to see how the ball's gonna bounce!
  • GOOOOO STEELERS!!! Oh wait... what... no.... nevermind. Football season has been over for a while as far as I'm concerned! :-(

Carrie - hope that house of yours gets healthy soon!!!

Well - not football related in the least, but I am SO happy the JOS is FINALLY here! Just what I needed. I think I might actually have some endorphins again. And mojo. Definitely mojo. IMLP is #3 for me and I'm gradually getting back to where I was pre-injury/broken foot - getting back at it slowly with the Beginner OS Plan and OMG... (!!!!!!) found myself back in the sub-9 minute mile club on Sunday's run. After months (and months) of watching everyone else in town running when I drove around, I was super happy just to be OUT THERE... running! In 10 weeks, someone please remind me how grateful I am that my body is still in working order and I'm able to do this!

Feel free to return to your regularly scheduled football discussion...
  • All discussions welcome Jess!!! I am so happy for you that you are healthy and running and getting your mojo back.

The passion football talk brings to the group makes me smile!!
  • I'm football-pathetic. The last football game I watched more than half of was last year's Superbowl. I did manage to catch about half of ISU's bowl game, but one of my kids had a short medical appointment in the middle of it. Fortunately for us, at least we saw mostly the part where ISU did well. Unfortunately for ISU, that was the first part of the game. :-)

  • BEAUTIFUL William!!!!

I'll post a fun Madison picture from a few years ago.
  • I haven't gotten off to the OS start I had hoped for. I don't really have an A race this year and am really looking to just build my biking this year o I guess it is ok. On a whim I got a job teaching spinning 2 nights a week that will really throw off the OS week.

This is the time of year I actually watch football. For the first time I saw the 49ers play and I was impressed with the quarterback. I may have to put my cheering behind them.

Hoping to stay healthy and wishing the same for the rest of the group!
  • At William ... You look much fitter and tougher now!
  •  Meh. Football. Don't you people know that hockey is back!?!?!?

Actually, meh to major sports. I used to watch avidly. Now, it just doesn't matter. If the Eagles are on, I'll watch a bit. I do like watching hockey (I better, I spend about 10hrs at rinks every week for my daughters), but I don't set my schedule around it. It's not like the old days, when a team was together for years. Now the guys you hate on the opposition this year will probably be on your team next year. As Seinfeld said, we're just cheering for a uniform now. I'm not really into that.

I'm one of those strange Americans who likes real football - i.e. soccer. I always have a game on when I'm riding the trainer. The only sport I do arrange my schedule around (again, strange American) is Formula 1 racing. Why? I don't know. They're all a bunch of EuroPrimaDonnas and they rarely pass. Still, I find it compelling, like no other motorsport.

  • Thanks William for the picture posting lesson.  I will use that to post this picture:

Very excited to announce (finally got the green light start telling people!) that my wife is pregnant with our second!  We're all excited, especially our 4 yo daughter, who can't wait to help.  Triathlon-wise, the late-July due date puts a hole in my season and leaves me out of Racine 70.3.  But I'm still planning on IMWI and hoping that I won't lose too much fitness after the baby comes.  But I'm well aware that the race is just a hobby/game (albeit an expensive one!) and taking care of the family will be priority No. 1.  Now I need to talk to Coach R about a new plan of attack.

  • Dave - That is AWESOME!!!! Congrats to you all.
  • @ Paul - yeah, I got pretty soft during college. I wasn't exactly a big athlete in high school, but I was pretty inactive in college altogether, and I got married in between college and grad school. Didn't start running until grad school.

I used to weigh as much as 35 pounds more than I do now (~150 norm, a little less racing, a little more at the beginning of the season)
  • Congrats Dave. Nice ultrasonographer to get that good a profile. (Been there done that a LOT of times...)
  • DAVE, CONGRATULATIONS!!! So the due date is early July? My wife is due in the very end of June actually...also knocking Racine off my schedule for this year (I think...). I'm surprised you will still have IMWI on there -- I've essentially written off Vegas (which is on the same weekend) due to an expectation of limited training time after the baby comes. You may find the move from 1 to 2 kids is quite a lot of work on the homefront. At least that's what we found. Now we're going from man to zone with 3 and I think getting out on my bike on the weekend will be quite difficult.
  •  FWIW, I found the jump from 1 to 2 to be less work (3yr gap between kids). A lot less "omigod if we screw this up in the next 30 seconds the baby will be dead" and a lot more "been there, done that, changed the diaper."  My wife is a pretty low-maintenance dame.  Your mileage may vary!

Either way, congratulations and good luck!!!!!!!!! It gets better and better every day. My girls are 9 and 12 now and I love them dearly.

  • Thanks everyone! We're very excited for #2! Honestly I wish the timing was a little better in relation to IMWI, but we are very grateful to have another on the way period, and the timing is what it is.

Matt - congratulations on your upcoming new arrival, too! I saw your post/thread about your season, but didn't want to hijack it. Ours is due in late July (24th) - I know the training will take a hit, but I'm excited to participate and I'd rather give it a go under-trained than lose $500 by withdrawing. Plus my parents live in Madison, so we'll have a home base, that isn't that far from home in the first place, for race weekend, which will hopefully make things easier. Good luck with the zone coverage!

Guess I'll just have to study all the EN race execution stuff I can while I'm home with the family leading up to the race!
  • Dave and Matt!
Congrats to you both! Stayed with Man on Man coverage myself, so good luck being out numbered ! image

Carrie, bummer about the start of 2013 for you. Hoping all stay well at your place and your house behaves too!
  • Just sent my girl off to school ( third grade)l, first day back since her Flu. She is so weak and ridiculously lean after 5 days of not eating much at all. Maybe 700 total calories in 5 days. Most of that in the form of cytomax. It sucks to see your kids suffer. Hoping she has a great day seeing her friends and we can get back to a level of "normal" soon.

Hoping you are all healthy. THE FLU SUCKS. I am not a fan at all image.
  • Congrats on the new additions Dave and Matt!!

Don't forget to photoshop an aero helmet into those Ultrasounds!!
  • GO SF 49ers!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

TOM BRADY up next!!! CAN. NOT. WAIT.
  • Last weekend, 0-4. This weekend, 1-1.

BOO niners! I'll never hear the end of it from my dad (a lifetime 49ers fan).

    Harbowl or Superbaugh?!?
  • Leaving for my honeymoon tomorrow! Woot! Took two years to be able to take it, but we did it image

Had to bag a few workouts this week, got some sort of crud that is going around. Was on a roll before that too image

Planning on doing some base runs with the wife while we're gone, some swims, then working the rest of the OS hard when I get back. You guys have fun in the meantime image
  • Have a great time Brendon!!
