Getting GoPro Video of Swimming

I would like to get some video of my swimming so I can actually see what I'm doing...and possbily send it about for comments/review. I have a GoPro which I can submerge in the pool. Any reccomendations for how to do this? Have you put it at the end of the lane, or on the bottom of the pool.

I'm usually on my own in the pool (or amongst strangers) so I don't have someone to walk along with the camera on a stick.

I know it's not overly complicated...just wanted to see what has worked for folks in the past.

  • It will require some ingenuity because it will float naturally in the waterproof case. It's got a wide capture angle so I would take one from the side and another from the front. The key will be 1)rigging some sort of weight for it to remain fixed underwater and 2) that the distance is enough to get a good perspective on your stroke, but not far enough to lose perspective.
  • I usually do the video with my son. We take turns recording each other. No matter how I've tried, it's not easy to get a video that's good for diagnosis. I have placed the camera on the coping to get a frontal shot out of the water. If you had a couple of suction cups, you could probably attach it to the bottom and swim over it or attach it to the wall under the waterline and get front and rear shots. Best of luck.
  • Coach had us swim against the boey line and he was at the wall. You could have some under water filming you and then just before you hit half way they pop up for a breath and back down to you from behind.
  • I have a ratcheting suction cup we use to attach the camera to our rowing shells. I'll give it a try on the bottom and sides and see what I get.
  • I think you can do a pretty good job above the water with a smart phone / iPad / tablet or other good camera and then load it into the Ubersense app. for IOS or Android. The slow motion / stop motion video capture can be pretty eye opening, especially to us slow swimmers with really bad form.
  • I agree Tom, but what happens under the water is just as important, dont you are agree. Above the water I look much better, than under.
  • Brenda, totally agree. I guess my point was that almost everyone can do an above the water look and get some pretty good analysis, especially with the Ubersense app. Underwater is just often much harder to get, but get it if you can.
  • @Brenda, thinking about your question some more and I think I approach my answer from the prospective of a poor swimmer, so anyone on deck can easily see areas of improvement needed in my stroke - so an above water camera is more than good enough for someone like me. Probably as you get better and technique issues get fewer and fewer, I can see that a lot of underwater analysis would make sense. The coach on deck has figured out the easy stuff.
