IM Austria 2013

Anyone here who will do the Ironman Austria 2013?

I live just a few km away from the bike course (near FaakerSee - this is the first real hill you have to climb during the race) so I was there watching all those "crazy" guys and ladies for the last 4-5 years and this year I'll be with them on the track image

  • What a fantastic backyard you have! It's on my to-do list, but not for several years. I just hope I don't catch a hot year like 2012.
  •  Yepp that's true - not all of us could do the RR on the real race course image

Last year was incredible hot you're totaly true. I spent almost 10 hours supporting a friend of mine and when I was leaving Klagenfurt back home the temperature was 38degC - the hottest day in the whole year image

The best conditions I could remember were in 2011. I can't even think of having better conditions ... 22degC water temp, 27-28degC outside temp, cloudy but absolutely no wind.

Unfortunately the race director changed the bike course to avoid a possible dangerous U-turn on the still wet road so the course was actually a little bit too short ... nevertheless there has never been a faster IM in the history than this one!

  • I actually did the race in 2011 and it was ideal! I love the race venue and the country and the people!

  • Hey that's nice to hear and maybe I saw you on the track as I was a spectator as ever since years - 2011 was the FASTEST IM race ever image Everything was just perfect for racing but normally you would have no clouds and about 5-10degC more.
  • 38C???? I would have melted.

Actually, sounds like temps at the Providence 70.3 every year, then add humidity. Gosh, I just love baking like a cookie on that run course. Not.

  • Yes you are absolutely right ... it was really not the perfect weather for racing that day image
I think statistically the average finisher time from 2011 to 2012 went up by about 1 hour and there have never been more DNF as in that year ... not mentioning that swimming without swimsuit for the very first time since 14 years was also pretty surprising for most of the athletes.

I was following the race almost all day long and it was also really hard for all of the supporters out there because most of them had no possibility to just put a full can of ice-water over your head all 30 minutes ... so in the end of that day I was also really baked!!
  • Stefan,

Best of luck with IM Austria 2013.I can tell by your posts that you are very strong and should tear it up.

God-willing I hope to do it in 2014 (my 4th IM). I will be entering the 60-64 AG that year and hope to travel through Europe with my wife for a couple of weeks after the race. How's that for a 60th birthday present!

Hope to get as much information as I can about the race. I've heard great things about it.

  • Thx David and just tell me if I can help with some infos or something else.
