Anyone else done the TeamEN Winter swim challenge?
I had a go tonight after work, first time I have done any sort of swim TT in years. I managed 1km in 24.55 and it was as painful and ragged as it was slow. I think I need to look at doing some swim work in the OS!
Still, I’m not too gutted by this time, I have no swim background and haven’t done any swim training for years (or actually swum in the pool for months). My 1500m PR is 36ish minutes (I'm usually one of the stragglers at the back of a standard tri swim). IM distance swims used to take me 1.20-1.30 in open water (1.45- 2.00 in the pool).

I am taking full advantage of the "no swimming in the OS" feature of EN, and enjoying it!!!
I'm still recovering from years of competitive swimming - sometimes I get the shakes when I think about a pool....
That being said, it is a luxury I can afford. I wish they would put the swim at the end of the tri and make it REALLY count for something. Instead they let the doggone runners get all the glory.
* Look straight down
* Remove some of the rotation out of my stroke, 60 degrees is enough, not 90 degrees
* Arm that’s in the water, think down like the keel of a boat not straight out in line with body
* Don’t let body get too floppy - direct through head
* Legs, lock knees (but don’t lock knees)
* I am bit late with timing when taking a breath
The result - 23.30 for 1km swim test (yes, I know this is still very slow!). Test was done 2 weeks after workshop, 0 time spent in pool or doing drills, Thursday bike work out done in the morning.
I knocked almost a minute and a half off my previous 1km swim test and had energy to spare. It was hard to remember to make the changes and everything felt pretty awkward (as you would expect). Not sure whether or not to be impressed. Guess I should get in to pool, do some of the recommended drills and see what happens next month!
