The worlds best aero frontwheel ... clincher ;)

I'm just thinking of investing in a new Frontwheel just for TT so it must be just AERO LIKE HELL image

Currently I'm driving a Vuelta Carbon Pro which has somehow managed to beat a lot of the "expensive" guys in terms of AERO some years ago.

At the moment these are my favs:

- Xentis Mark1 TT

- HED H3D

- Zipp 808

- HED Jet 9

What do you think - have I left something out of the race?

Which one would be the best choice just for pure flat TTs?

  • I thought the 808 firecrest is the "fastest" but I know it depends on yaw angles
  • Steve Harrast dropped this link in another thread. Really cool article. It actually goes from pages 92-106. It looks like the FC808 is the winner if you are to believe the article...

  • 808 is a lot of wheel up front in a cross wind. 404 could handle better with minimal aero trade off.... image
  • @Dino, pre firecrest I agree with you.  But the 808 firecrest handles really well in a crosswind, escpecially with a disc in the back.  You still notice you have a deep wheel but you don't get any of the torque steer effect like with an older 808.  Almost anyone can handle an 808 firecrest front with a wheel cover in the back.

I ride my 808 front / wheel cover front in everything except kona and I'm one of the lightest guys around.  For Kona I like the 404/808 as I think that combo feels better than a 808/808 or 404/404.  Therefore I think the 404 firecrest is the best do it all front wheel as you will never find a race you can't ride a 404 firecrest.  I think of the 808 as the fastest front wheel for long corse triathlon.

@Stefan - I noticed you mentioned TT only, but you have an IM in your signature, so I'm a bit confused.  Are you really only using it for TTs or are you racing tris on it as well?  What distance TT and average speed do you hold?  Matt, hit the nail on the head and the yaw angle can be key if you really want to get  the absolute fastest wheel for your key races.  Hed has some good info on this on their site.  If you are truly only doing TTs and in the 25mph+ range something like a H3D with a 19mm tire might be fastest or a Zipp 1080 front with a 19 is a VERY fast wheel at low yaw, but stalls quickly and slows down at high yaw.

If you what the fastest in most conditions and to be able to run a 23mm tire the 808 firecrest is the wheel to go with.  I think the 404 or 808 firecrest are both much better options for long course tris.  If those are more than you want to speed, you can get much of the performance for a lower cost from a Jet 6 or 9 (just make sure they are the newer wider rim with the new shape) or something like a FLO or Bonty wheel (also make sure it is the latest model with the wider rim and blunt shape).

  • Thx for all that details. I already once had a pair of old 404s but I recently sold them because I wanted to get rid of all that tubular stuff image
You're right - I'm not in the TT business! I'm in the triathlon business so yes for this year I focus on long course!

I was already thinking a little about the FLO 60 as an option. Does anyone of you have experience with that wheel?
  • @ Stefan - there was a recent thread here on FLO wheels which had some pretty good info. I tried finding it for you, but somehow I can't find it anymore. Maybe someone else has better luck. Their next pre-order opens end of February.

There's also a pretty exhaustive ST threat on FLO wheels here:

    Good luck!

  • Thx - sounds great so far image
  • 1. I would buy used. Let someone else take the depreciation. (www.UsedZipp.com)
    2. Consider renting or borrowing so you can see what you think of the wheel first.
    3. H3D is heavy and not as versatile as the H3. That is the one you want. Get one with a true rollout.
    4. Not a fan of Xentis.
    5. All the other wheels you are considering are good choices.
Let us know what you doimage
