Unstructured training week?

I feel like a real baby. Honestly, I'm over 50 but I don't know what to do with an unstructured training week.  I finish the OS at the end of this week, then I have a week before I go into the get faster plan for about a month, etc.  So, it's the middle of winter in the upper midwest.  If I lived someplace warm, I'd take some touring rides, hang with the local cycling club, run with the neighborhood clan, but none of that is happening right now.  Another fall back is to hit the pool and do some technique work, but that's a 2, maybe 3 day diversion.  What about the other 3 days?  Find a yoga class?  Do core work in the basement and make myself sore?  What do you guys like to do?

  • Having done a few weeks of the GF plan, I'd swim easy, run 2-3 times short, and rest the remainder of the time. Absorb the work from the OS. The GF plan is no joke.
  • XC ski? Play games on the trainer during the Super Bowl? Do a walking tour of a new neighborhood, or a new village? For sure, do 2-3 easy runs to keep the neurons firing.

  • I'd also focus on recovery and for sure keep the volume down!
Doing some (3-4) short runs that week would be great - focus on technique in the MS and end up with some strides.
I'd also add 2 or 3 bike sessions but nothing really hard ... just play around a little with various cadences and do maybe some one-foot stuff. Keep below 75% and 60min.
Swimming - just do it ... I think there's no triathlete out in the world that doesn't need more swimming skills.
  • x2 on swimming if that works for you.. I'm planning to re-enter the pool in a big way during that week, in part to allow recovery from all this running, but mostly to start down the long road to swimming fitness...
  • The pool is a reat idea but like Al said mix it up some before the next heavy work load hits.
