GI issues

Has anybody ever developed GI issues from long term use of Perform, power bar, powerbar gels, etc

Comments

  • John what do you mean by long term issues, over the course of  a race or over 2 to 3 weeks? Just curious, I've had issues over the course of the race with perform, but none since I switched to 1st Endurance

  • Been using products for 6 months and never really had an issue. Recently began noticing GI bloating and diarrhea. Seem to recall intermittent episodes but nothing lasting long. Not sure if product or something else. Figured I'd see if others have had issues
  • You might have an allergy to fructose.
  • might wanna research Allen Lim's stuff, The Feed Zone, Secret Drink Mix, Rice Cakes, etc.

I'm giving it a shot. Because of GI issues. It's a long story. Basics...he had to come with stuff his riders to digest easier/quicker and not suffer from the Hi Sugary Gut Shutdown Crap or bloating or nausea.

I know, everyone is trying to sell us stuff, but I'm giving it a shot (tho, I'm going with the routine gels for the runs).

  • Since this recently started in the OS, I wonder if it has anything to do with the higher heart rate you sustain during workouts. That can cause your gut to shut down, especially in combo with the sugary products. Maybe you need less sugar in the short term.
  • When working out drink perform and have a gel every thirty minutes. Have no problems while training.
  • I had the same thought as Sarah - if it's a recent onset with the start of the OS, it may be a thing where your body isn't used to processing food at a higher intensity.

I'm confused by the statement that you have no problems while training - because if you are in the OS... isn't that training? Or were you referring to training prior to the OS?

Also - how much Perform do you drink in an hour? It may be that between 24 oz of Perform (just stabbing at that number, since many sports bottles are 24 oz in size) plus the gel is too much.

If I were you, I'd set up a design of experiments. Start with removing the gel and see if that helps. Then add back in the gel, but switch from perform to water. See what happens. Then add electrolytes (similar concentration to what is in Perform) to the water. See what happens. Go from there - trying different sports drinks and gels to see if you notice a pattern.

  • Started OS in November and currently in Get Faster Plan. Typically drink 6-8 oz every 10-15 minutes. Gel or 1/2 power bar every 30. Recovery drink after WO. Have been doing since July. Have no problems with cramping or gas while riding or running. Not entirely sure how long it's been going on just became noticeable in the past 2 days. Stomach rumbling and diarrhea. Over past day frequency has increased.possible it is completely unrelated? May have just picked up a bug?
