Big Bike Week near Berlin, Germany - How? Where? Wha?

I have to be in Berlin for the first week of July, and would like to use the preceeding week as a Big Bike Week. Does anyone have tips about how or where I might accomplish this somewhere within a reasonable distance outside of Berlin?

Or, failing that, are there any tips about DEU destinations that would be accessible via a short and cheap flight from Berlin?  I had been thinking around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but I have no idea if there is an airport served by charters that would make it an easy trip.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

  • Roll over to France for le Tour!
  • I don't know much about Berlin, but lived in Bonn for a couple of years. You can pedal for 100's of miles along the Rhine River. Germany is the land of cheap flights with Ryan Air and other such companies. Think Southwest, but cheaper. If you could swing it, I will highly recommend trying to fly or train into Grenoble France and drive the 45 minutes to the base of Alpe d'Huez. I spent close a week there on an epic bike trip up and over the classic mountain stages. Totally cheap vacation, stay in cheap hotel. Pizza and beer at night. Happy to send you my trip details if you like.
  • Dave - Garmisch is an excellent location for training, but I don't know of any regional airport there. To get there, I've flown into Munich, then caught the train from the airport to Garmish. You will get lots of hill work in that area.
