Gray 9.5 Carbon Clinchers

Anyone using these wheels or have any thoughts on them? I found a set that has never been used for a great price but I'm not familiar with these wheels.

Thanks,

Jamie

  • Jamie, I'm sponsored by Gray, so I have some bias, but I had the same question when looking at them the first time around. From the material I found on ST, they had a reputation for being very durable, stiff and light wheels. Although I haven't been able to get a definitive answer on the exact rim shape, and particularly whether it was a v or the more recently popular toroidal shape, one respondent did claim that they were a much more rounded profile than previous-generation v profiles. Additionally, the owners of Gray/Synergy did note, in an endurance (???whatevername - can't remember) podcast, that they did develop their own molds for the rim. Finally, I had been in correspondence about the 9.5s with Ben Greenfield, who was sponsored by Gray before he was taken on by Shimano, and he noted that in his experience, the aerodynamic gains from the 9.5s were comparable to the Zipp 808FCs he used previously.

I've been working with Gray to get an EN team discount on their stuff - look for this once the handover of "EN gear guy responsibilities" are complete.
  • Thanks for the feedback Dave! After further investigation from the seller, they were tubulars and not clinchers unfortunately and I'm not sure I want to go the tubular route. They were brand new, never used for $899.
  • I'm hoping the team discount will get us to around that price point. Stay tuned.
