17 Hours, the video
I finally rented and watched "17 Hours" today while doing a trainer workout (yes I'm about 2 years behind the curve). Frankly while it offered some distraction for the intervals it really wasn't all that good and I wouldn't recommend it. However, I feel compelled to write about the one segment of the video and hear what others thought.
At the end of the video there is a little "bonus" segment where Roman Mica does a version of "Cash Cab" Kona style (that game show where folks get in a cab and answer questions to earn cash before they get to their next stop). 3 ladies get into the cab, one of them is going to be doing the IM that weekend and the other two are her friends/support crew. Sitting in the back seat with them is the "Cash Cab Guest Star Host" who happens to be Mark Allen. While I found it slightly amusing at first that none of the ladies seemed to recognize Mark Allen (despite the fact he was introduced as a "Star Host" and was wearing Mark Allen Online stuff from head to toe), I became increasingly irritated at the fact that the woman who would be racing IM in Kona that weekend was the LAST person in the car to figure out who Mark was (and it took the whole frigging ride and lots of hints to get her there). I remain a supporter of the Lottery system at Kona, but geeze oh man, that had even me thinking that maybe there needs to be a better standard. Sigh.

Nemo,
That's definitely interesting. The lottery was put in place to ensure that anyone has a chance to get in. This makes the recent changes to the legacy look better, thus allowing those that put years in to qualifiying actually experience it. Not that those that watched last years race and get a lottery this year should not but it would be nice to see some respect for race. For me the minimun would be putting in the training to complete the race.
I suspect as we get further from the Allen/Scott era there will be fewer and fewer people that recognize them. I'd have to go look it up but when was the last time Mark won 1995/96? so 18 years ago. The casual triathlete may not follow like the rest on the crazed pack.
