SANTOS BRAZIL INTERNATIONAL OLY
SANTOS INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC
RACE REPORT JUAN VERGARA
Third year I do this race in February (first race of the season).
2011: 02:32:00 - 8th place (no podium ... only first five per AG).
2012: 02:22:57 - 6th place (no podium but ..... PB and closer to a trophy!!!)
2013: 02:18:26 - 5th place .... Podium ... Trophy .... Personal Best!!!
Made this race to coincide with my last week of OS and skipped testing this week to make the race a real life test.
Before the race:
As done for my last HIM last year (PB) strictly followed QT2 Systems pre-race and race nutrition (much MORE calories than the year before). Calories in every 30 minutes from the start (Power Gel and Perform).
The Swim
00:27:30 - 7th AG / 344 overall (15 second improvement vs last year). Just focused on maintaining form and, most important, maintaining direction to avoid the "extra" distance!!!
The Bike
Following a smooth and fast T1, mounted my bike, turned on my Joule and ...... NO POWER ON THE SCREEN!!!! Only "perceived power" shooting for 90-100% and bye-bye end of OS testing in real life.
01:04:44 - 4th AG / 241 overall (4 minute improvement vs last year).
T2 (Don't have the T1/T2 times (both included in the bike split)
After a very clean dismount, entered transition barefoot (bike shoes on the pedals) and ..... I guess I will never figure out how I stumbled and rolled over my bike halfway through transition pushing my bike as always. No relevant damage to the body .... don't think it costed me more than 10 seconds ..... but the bike looked kind of crooked (forget about it for now .... JUST RUN!!!!).
The Run
Hmmmmm instruments playing with me today ..... The footpod is not sending SPM to the GARMIN ..... Forget about SPM and focus on PACE .... disciplined execution!!!! Which I did until 5K when very rapidly raising temperature (89 degrees ... way above the forecast) slowed me down and ended with my negative split attempt!!!!
00:46:11 - 7th AG / 222 overall (37 seconds better than last year).
Picking up the bike in transition: hmmmmm not a pretty site from the distance .... Bull horns looked quite crooked ..... As I get closer .... 1 Gorilla carbon cage broken .... and when I get very close ..... One RIDLEY carbon frame broken .... From a "walking stumble" in transition!!!!
Well, lets look at the bright side: I just got myself a brand new P5-six (arrived a couple days before the race) and decided not to race with it as I had done all of my OS with the
RIDLEY!!!!! I had been quite mad at my LBS for delaying the new bike delivery for almost 1 month ..... but there is always a reason why things happen!!!!
That's it. End of OS with an OLY PB, 4 weeks of GF starting on Tuesday and then move into HIM for Ironman Florida 70.3 in May.
Hard Work Works and I love this Nation!!!!
