temp calculator questions

Now that bike test is complete  - I'm trying to put new #'s into temp calculator to get new HR and Power zones. I have 2 questions:

1 - For some reason the "power zone" box is blank (unlike Coach P's in instructional video). There is a box above it to enter a value, but nothing in the larger box below where zones should be. And, if I enter a number in small box, nothing shows up in power # box. Anyone have a similar issue or solution?

2 - To refresh my memory, do results from VO2 TEST or FTP TEST get plugged to get new HR and Power zones?

Thanks for the help!!!

  • I noticed the same thing today when I tried to use the Temp Calculator
  • You will see that at the bottom of the page there are two tabs. If you click on the second tab you will see the calculator with the power on it. I just copied and used that one to put my info in.
  • For dummies like me, who took 5 minutes to figure out what Brenda was saying ... find "Master Copy (Can't Edit/Use), down at the bottom of the page (no need to scroll, click on it, select duplicate, then use the resulting "Copy of Master Copy".

  • @Al - I guess I fall into that category as well since I looked 3x at what Brenda responded and could not figure it out until you gave me the "child's" version! Thank you...

@Brenda - Thanks for trying, but I am obviously not up to speed (technology-wise)!

  • Sorry guys, not always the best at explaining myself. Glad Al figured it out and shared.
  • This may be a reaaaaaaly stupid question, but...do I enter my average wats for the 20min test, or reduce the average by 5% and enter that resulting number to calculate the zones?

  • @Andrew - I entered avg watts for 20 min test (before 5% reduc). Hope that is correct since it puts that # at top of zone 4 and FTP at bottom zone 4. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?
  • Looking @ the spreadsheet, I can see the confusion. The entry box for Bike Power reads "Bike test Avg Power". Down below, the zones are laid out as % ages of that entered power. Eg zone 4 (95-100%) shows 100% to be the same number as was entered. Since that 100% is *supposed* to be your FTP, logic would say, "Enter 95% of your average power for 20 minute test," is what the instructions should really read.

IOW, enter your FTP as calculated from the 20 min test. FTP=0.95*AP during the 20 minutes (you can use NP, but they should be within 1-2 watts of each other).

That's what I did, anyway. Otherwise, your new FTP zone will have you working 5% too hard for those intervals. You'll soon discover you can't manage that routinely, day after day.
