OSMO Nutrition

Just read an interesting article over on ST titled: OSMO Nutrition Test". It looks like in an admittedly small sample size, some potentially interesting results regarding lowering core temp were generated with OSMO. Never tried the stuff and I am homping that one of the many many EN members with more book lurnin than me will take a look and tell me what they think.

Right now I am following the core diet fuling plans which call for powerade and powergel mostly. Which seems to be relatively dense in terms of solute to solvent.

Thx in advance for your thoughts.

  • I used Core Diet last year and it rocked! Stay the corse and race with it.
  • Hi Jimmy,

Osmo is really electrolytes - not fuel. Your race nutrition plan has three components: fuel, fluid, and electrolytes. You could use it as an electrolyte source but even then it is a mid-level source of sodium. It depends on how much sodium you need.

I have several posts on my blog about putting together a race nutrition plan (just search "race nutrition"). blog.eatingforperformance.com.
  • My personal opinion is that there are a lot of opinions (many of them thoughtful, reasonable, and based on available scientific evidence). This is a really great interview with Stacy Sims done by Ben Greenfield. It has shaped my thinking about nutrition in endurance sports, particularly the Ironman distance.

Oh wow! you are right. It isnt fuel at all. I just went to thier website. A full 24oz bottle is 35cal.

I guess though that as tested on ST it would be fine. They only ran a 1hr test and most of that was at moderate intensity. One wouldnt need much fuel for a 1hr moderate intensity ride. A better test for our purposes would have been 6 to 12 hrs long. And I guess a control group drinking water only in thier test would have been interesting to see as well.

    THX!

Me too! Since adding core diet fuel and picklejuice,  I have raced twice. A 70.3 and a 26.2. The 70.3 was a 20+min PR and the marathon was a 28min PR. For the first 2 times in I dont know how many 3+hr events, I didnt cramp. CD has been a game changer for me.

  • I think you meant powerbar Perfom not powerade? They are quite different.
  • Yes Robert. My bad. Perform. The stuff that they put on course at WTC events.
