Quick Video of Pete Jacobs bike file article from Triathlete.com

Was online today and saw this article on Pete Jacobs' ride in Kona....it's totally generic in that it doesn't use the raw data, but sometimes the "basic" version of events/data makes a more interesting learning tool.

So I put together a quick video on it...enjoy!

  • So for the average age grouper would it NOT be two different bike races because the winds will pickup for them on the back half and therefore require equivilent work both out and back?
  • Interesting.

    Any lessons to apply to age groupers that are trying for Kona qual at non-Kona races?        depends on the course?   Someplace like Arizona, race like three mini-Konas with up and down each one?       Texas should apply same effort the whole course because of the backside winds?

  • Trainingpeaks also posted the full file for Pete Jacobs, and several other professionals too.

  • Great post, P. Thanks!
  • @Robert, yes that's my analysis...in general the sooner you can get to Hawi the better, but if you are already 30' behind the pros, and you swim a 1:20 (not a 1:03) and you average 19.5 at your peak (vs 22.5 ish) then your efforts are better placed being steady.

    @Robin, good question....my fundamental assumption re the racing progression still stands. Step one I want you to execute a great race first (proper pacing). Then in step two I want you to race to your ability -- in your case to nail that run we know you have in you. Then step three is to push your racing to the limits; what I talk about in the video is just that, elite athletes (Pro and AG alike) pushing the envelope in key portions of a race for maximum results.

    @Michael, thanks for that link!
  • Thanks for your insights Patrick. I'd like to "hit you up" on a bike strategy for "racing" the new IMCanada course in a few months. I've dissected the bike and run course profiles and am training accordingly. I also live only an hours drive to Whistler so I'll be doing lots of training on the course once the temperatures warm up and snow melts up there. You know what my goal is... : ) Hope that would be cool with you?
