Bike Floor Pump Recommendations?

I'm sick of my bike floor pump. At this point it's nearly impossible to pump a tire by yourself because the valve won't stay on. Works fine if someone is there to hold it perfectly still on the center of the bike stem with a little bit of pressure. This is like the 3rd bike pump I've had that sucks. The one I have now is the Specialized Airtool Pro pump. The last time I was frustrated with my pump, I walked into my LBS and asked them to sell me the Best Pump they had, and that is what they gave me. Unfortunately that was only like a yr ago.

One of my Roadie buddies has used his Topeak Joe Blow Sport II for yrs now without any issues, but can a $40 really be that good? Their Joe Blow Ace cost 2.5x as much so as a triathlete, that is supposed to mean it's better, right? Another buddy likes his Lezyne CNC Floor Drive.

So what say you fellow EN Gear geeks. What is the best freakin' mack daddy pump out there? I must be able to use it for yrs by myself without wanting to throw it! Bonus points if I can actually use it with my wheelbuilder disc cover on, but certainly not the top priority...

  • I use the Topeak Joe Blow Pro floor pump and also have a JoeBlow Turbo, both use the same basic design. The nice part of the Smarthead Topeak pumps is that you can replace the head entirely or buy a parts kit for the head as things wear out over time thus extending the life of the pump.
At races I use the Topeak Mega Morph because it's easy to transport but can still inflate a tire to 120 if you need it pretty easily.
  • Bonus points if your WIFE can use it without needing 100% of her body weight to depress the pump!

And I actually deflated my tire completely with that thing today. Took me three tries to get my stupid tire pumped.
  • John - we have two of the Bontrager Turbo Charger WSD. Meets all your criteria except for the last one.

No issues and have had one of them for 4+ years w/o issue. I didn't think I would like it, but I do. BONUS - Jess will be able to use it easily as well.
  • I have a BOntrager one that was $40-ish and works great. Much easier to use than the Pedro one I had before that crapped out.
  • I have the Topeak Joe Blow Pro and I still sometimes need to use two hands or a second person.

I recently used someone's Serfas pump at a race and was impressed with it, i do not know the model number.
  • I have had a Silca pump for almost 20 years and it is still as good as the day I bought it.
  • Come on JW! Step up.

First you need one of these:

    Then one of these:

    Done!
  • When my current Bonti pump wears out, my next one will be a Lezyne Alloy Drive Floor Pump - travel version.
  • Lezyne floor pump. Rock solid.
  • Over the decades, with multiple van supported multi day trips (including x-country), lots of mountain biking, daily commuting, tandeming, and now all this tri training, needless to say I've gone through a ton of pumps. The two which have stood the test of time for both durability and ease of use are:

    • For home and back of the car use, the Lezyne Sport FD, under $50. You can pay twice as much for a Lezyne, for better materials, IMO no need. Biggest advantage: the valve is metal and screws onto presta valves, so no chance of popping off. Also, the triangle shaped base is solid. Not the biggest pump (26 pumps to fill a 700c to 110psi, compare to 22  or so in the best I've used), but its durable and reliable.
    • To take with me when I fly my bike to a race or exotic locale - which I do usually 5x per year - A Topeak Master Blaster (which now goes under the name Road Morph, I think). Shaped like a frame pump (I use it on the tandem, where it gets a lot of on the road use, those things are rough in tires), it has a little foot which pops out, a flip out handle, a pressure gauge, and a flexible, extendable hose for easy manipulation in a hotel room or at the side of the road.

I have at least five other pumps hanging around the house at the moment, including the two I keep on my TT and road bikes, but these are the two workhorses.

  • Oh, forgot to add on the Lezyne - it comes with a little right angle attachment for the end of the valve, for use on disc wheel or cover.
  • Topeak Joe Blow Pro.. Great pump.. Designed so you can take it apart and replace the gaskets if needed.

  • 1. One of the Lezyne Floor Drive pumps.
    2. One of the Topeak Joe Blow pumps w/SmartHead
    3. Nothing else matters.
