The "What are You Watching?" Thread

The Wire

My injury and brief adventures into the exciting world of bedrest encouraged me to rewatch "The Wire," purchasing and downloading each episode from Amazon into my Tivo.  The show is just off the charts good and I highly recommend every episode of every season. I'm halfway through Season 3 and am throughly enjoying the characters, storyline, realism, etc.

The Walking Dead

Big fan, though I'm disappointed by the on/off quality of the writing -- good episode followed by poor, etc. And as Patrick can attest to, I've been hitting the zombie / plague / societal collapse apocalypse genre on my Kindle for a few months now. The Walking Dead is a good extension of that and fun mental exercise of my knowledge of small unit tactics, patrolling, defense of a fixed position and other fun stuff.

  • Ditto on the Walking Dead. I also watch anything related to Alaska (Yukon Men) or Gold. Double points if is has Alaska and gold. Breaking Bad is really strong! I am also checking out these on DVR once a week:

    - Workaholics
    - Tosh.0
    - Girls
    - Spartacus
    - Pawn Stars
    - American Pickers

If you want to check out whole seasons go back and watch Madmen on Netflix. So solid!
  • All the CSIs (except Miami), the original NCIS, SNL (although the quality blows lately), Inside combat rescue, Vikings (new), red widow (new), Whitney, Big Bang theory, family guy, bar rescue (just started-really into it), law and order svu. Phew!

Pretty much record all of it on the DVR then skip thru commercials while I work/telecommute from my couch.
  • I'm currently in the middle of season 2 of Battlestar Galactica. I resisted for a long time as I thought it sounded kinda nerdy but it's actually really good and has a mythical slant to it that is a really neat twist on a show about outer space. I've heard good things about walking dead so that will be next but between my wife and I we can only squeeze in one series at a time so that will need to wait until after BSG. Other than that can't wait for the next seasons of game of thrones and true blood. I highly recommend both series.
  • Far and away - Breaking Bad (Netflix). Dark, funny, creative twists, etc.

We're watching Zero Hour - it's.. ok. Seems like it was written with Nicholas Cage as the protagonist, and they settled for Anthony Edwards. Suitable show, but my wife summed it best: if it were streaming, I'd just skip the show and read the plot synopsis online and be done with it.

House of Cards (Netflix) with Kevin Spacey - only saw one episode so far, but seems well written and produced.

Of course, 24 (Netflix). Even watching it again while on the bike doing workouts is sustainable.

Hmm.. I guess I watch less TV than I thought image

  • +1 on Battlestar Galactica. I watched the original as a kid and really got into the remake when it was on iTunes.
  • Right now going thru Breaking Bad, keeping up with Walking Dead and Justified (Rich you'd love that)

Past best bets: BSG, Wire, Deadwood (going thru it a second time for me right now with my wife), Lost (we just finished that together a few months ago), Firefly, The Shield

Junk, but good junk: 24, Jericho, Hell on Wheels, Torchwood

Heard good things about, but haven't checked out yet: Game of Thrones, Enlightened, Homeland (all in netflix queue)

Promising, but too soon too tell: The Americans (FX)

  • I'm looking forward to re-view every single one from Prison Break ... but I can't watch movies when doing that hard interval workouts so it has to wait a little image
  • Game of Thrones is great, although not having read the books it's helpful for my wife to give me some details that I would have missed.

Homeland...just finished watching season 1 and 2 in about 2 weeks. Season 3 in September can't get here soon enough
  • If you are on Netflix, House of Cards is a new solid independently produced series. Kevin Spacey as a very savvy, manipulative congressman.

X1000 on BSG, I've watched the entire series twice.
  • Jess and I just finished the 4th season of Sons of Anarchy, really cool show! @Rich, it's set in California and has bikes...

@Dino, Pawn Stars and American Pickers are two of our go to shows...
  • Just finished Downton Abby and starting on Justified - love that show. Waiting for Breaking bad season 5 part 2 and Game of Thrones.
  • Loving the show The Americans on FX....great Cold War spy stuff...

Also loving The Following, kind of a twisted series about a serial killer. Helps if you are a Kevin Bacon fan.
  • Word up on The Wire. One of the best shows ever.
  • Just finished watching all episodes of Firefly and am now watching Twin Peaks (Hulu). Reliving my youth I guess.
  • Loved The Wire.

Currently working our way through Breaking Bad. Excellent show!

Waiting on the return of Dexter and Game of Thrones.

Junk, but good junk: 24, Jericho, Hell on Wheels, Torchwood

I loved Jericho, for one simple reason - it had a defined beginning, middle, and end.  At a time when so many other shows had a solid start until they got their seasons renewed and then went fairly rudderless for a while (Oh, I dunno.. LOST!), Jericho had a great first handful of episodes, didn't get renewed after sweeps, and due to fan backlash (nuts!), the writers said 'well, shit - we gotta finish this up' and wrote an extra half season to wrap it up with a nice, tidy bow.

Great suggestion - totally blanked on that one.

But yeah, it's junk - ie, you're not going to be really getting any smarter for watching it

  • Breaking Bad -- yep, awesome show, looking forward to closing it out when the rest of the season comes out.

Sons of Anarchy -- pretty good but it bugs me that these guys bust caps, all over CA, and nothing really happens? At least in the Soprano's the violence was more...underground? More realistic, like The Walking Dead, which could totallly happen!

Game of Thrones -- I started the first book and couldn't really get into it but I'm willing to give the show a look.

BSG -- started this one also and made it midway through about Season 2 but just didn't get into it. Might be worth a second try.

Project Runway -- a guilty pleasure that Joanne and I share, though what man doesn't want to watch anything with Heidi Klum??

The dozens and dozens and dozens of "reality" shows are getting old. Auction doodes, doodes with axes, doodes pawning stuff...whatever. Makes me wonder about the shows that DON'T make it. I bet there are some real gems there

  • Just started watching "Combat Rescue" on NatGeo. Very impressive...and sobering. Watching a guy insert a chest tube into a soldier while flying in an HH-60 helicopter that is bouncing around was pretty eye-opening.
  • If you haven't seen Homeland you are really missing out! Totally interrupted my normal sleep. Couldn't stop watching. You have to cancel everything for a couple days and start watching!
  • I'll admit that I've been kinda binging on "reality" shows nowadays . My favourites:

American Colony (Nat. Geo.): Details the life of a Hutterite colony living in rural Montana. Lots of family drama, but really interesting to see their way of life and how they deal with the outside world.

Bar Rescue (SpikeTV): A hardassed bar consultant swoops in and saves various bars from financial ruin. Really interesting to see how a bar is run from behind the scenes, and I think this is something you'd like just from the business perspective of things.

  • I started watching House of Cards last night, looks promising.

I have Game of Thrones lined up next after I finish season 5 of The Wire and will probably hit Homeland after that.

Anson, when I was your age, or younger, I was a bartender in Atlanta so I know that world very well

  • Anson, I'm hooked on Bar Rescue too!
  • I struggle getting into reality shows.  The only one watch semi-regularly is Finding Bigfoot.  Ironically, I actually believe less in bigfoot since i have been watching that show.
  • 24 has been our addiction lately on Netflix. Never watched it before and now its 3 episodes at a time.

For a laugh Raising Hope is a hoot (Netflix for seasons 1 and 2).
  • Pat, you are lucky to have all that 24 to watch for the first time...I still make jack bauer references from time to time.
  • Shameless ftw. House of cards was awesome btw. Also pretty much anything on hgtv that has to do with moving somewhere warm.
  • I finished House of Cards last night. Good series, looking forward to next season. And I could watch Robin Wright for a very long time :-)
  • half way through season 2 of Shameless---hillarious

season 3 Game of Thrones starts tomorrow
  • Last night I finished season 1 of Homeland. Excellent series.
