Volunteer Positions

Guys, I am getting ready to sign up to volunteer at IMFL this year.  Plan is to register for 2014 race.  Any recommended spots/positions to volunteer for?  All the catcher positions are filled.  Here is what is available.

  • Link doesn't work. Only registered users can see inside.

My buddy volunteered at the awards presentation. He literally didn't do anything but move a couple of boxes.
  • I volunteered @ IMWis last year as a bike handler. Got to see a lot of cool bikes & different set-ups.
  • I did wetsuit peeling and catching at the last of the race. I loved peeling as it gave me a chance to feel the excitement of the morning. Catching the last finishers was awesome too because many of them I had peeled so I was able to see their day from start to finish. Pretty emotional.
  • Medical, hands down. Best position with the most excitement and running around, especially after 9 pm.
  • You can pretty much show up the day before the race and get a slot doing whatever you want. This happened to a friend of mine and me - ALL slots were filled online, and I tried emailing the RD, the volunteer coordinator, and everyone else I could... They all told me to "keep checking the site incase there was a vacancy." That didn't happen. So we went to the volunteer check in desk the day before, and they had a zillion things for us to do. We got our shirts and ended up in T2. My friend spent two hours sorting transition bags, but when Rinny came through she was strategically positioned so she could hand her her T2 bag (her claim to fame now!). It was super fast paced and totally crazy, but I'll likely do it again this year as my friend is racing (and it'll make it easy for me to grab her gear bags for her when she out of T2 and get them up to her condo like a good Sherpa!). If you have that volunteer shirt, it's pretty much your ticket anywhere behind the scenes (yes, I abused my privileges a little!). That's how I go into the finishing chute to grab a few pics of John.

Thanks for posting this - I didn't know volunteer slots were open already! I should try to do it the "right" way this year!
  • If you want to make a difference for the athletes AND get some valuable education, volunteer in the T1 or T2 change tents.  you can see what different athletes do to make transition go fast and what others do to make their transitions last forever.  Sometimes you have to think for the athletes whose brains have turned to mush.

If you want a position that gives you a good work-out be a bike handler in T2.  I logged almost 10 miles of sprinting at IMAZ last year.  You also get to see some awesome and weird bike set-ups (the later into the assignment, the stranger).
