Power numbers at LP 2009

This will be my 1st year racing Lp with power and curious  about the folks that have ridden with power at Lp and what kind of numbers you all put up and what it translated to in time.  I know there are many variables, time areo , out of saddle, weight, etc.  I need some motivation to do work!

Paul, in my experience it's not very useful to compare power numbers across different people, courses, w/kg, fitness, etc. Just focus on lifting your FTP as high as possible, as that is ultimately the cornerstone of a faster bike split. I've historically been about 212-217w Pnorm on race day but that's led to a variety of bike splits given w/kg, courses, bike setups, etc.

  • Paul -

maybe put out your stats (weight, FTP, race goals) and you can find some "similar" peeps?!

  • Paul,

A while back, I went through several of the IMLP race reports from 2009.  Here's some of the examples (hope I'm not stepping on any toes summarizing info found elsewhere in the forums!) :

Maryka: 148 watts, 5:49, weight unknown, AG winner

    Joe R: 181(Pnorm) watts, 6:10, 167 lbs

Carrie: 144 watts (before PT died), 5:57, weight unknown

    Jeremiah: 181 watts, 6:16, ~190 pounds

Bob A: unknown watts (FTP - 258), 5:53, weight unknown

    Mark D: 161 watts, 6:13, weight unknown

    Mike C: 178 watts, 5:44, weight unknown

Leigh: 125 watts, 7:07, weight unknown

    Dave B: ~190 watts. 6:45, weight unknown

watts #'s are average, unless otherwise noted.  So, it's kinda hard to predict based on this sample.  Having looked at a bunch of race reports across a several races, it seems like it's really hard to pick someone else and say "I'm about his/her size, and our FTP's are similar, therefore we should be about the same".  Think it has more to do with the last part of Patrick's post, goals.  Two identical people (weight, FTP), one with aggressive goals and one not, will make different choices out on the course (ie. staying in the bars vs. coming up, keeping watts steady vs. coasting, pushing over the top of the hill until you reach 34 mph on the downhill vs cresting and taking it a bit easy).  These little things can add up to a lot of time.

  • I did LP 2 years ago. 5:45 bike split, around 200 watts, about 160 pounds. I would add that both pacing and aero dynamics play big parts too. There were a lot of people surging up hills in the beginning that were dying at the end. Also, as is typical of many IMs and even HIMs, many people are no longer in the aero bars for the last 25% of the race. This must cost plenty of time and it seems a shame to give away essentially free speed by sitting up. Lots of people in $5K+ bikes, sitting up. Race rehearsals make a big difference. Practice staying locked into the bars!

This year I've been paying much more attention to fit. I'll let you know if it pays off!

  • This was from the rain year.  I was about 185-187 at the time.  VI was not very good that day but part of it was due to being too scared to pedal going down the big hill in the pouring rain.  MY FTP at that time I had pegged at 311.  As the others have suggested comparing power numbers with others is not a very useful exercise.

    Entire workout (196 watts):

    5:39:03

    Work: 3982 kJ

    TSS: 266 (intensity factor 0.687)

    Norm Power: 214

    VI: 1.09

    Min Max Avg

    Power: 0 422 196 watts

    Cadence: 30 244 90 rpm

    Speed: 2.4 48.2 20.1 mph

    Pace 1:15 24:46 2:59 min/mi

  • Thanks for the input.  My powertap died during the rainfest of 08 and I took 09 off so looking forward to giving it a go in Lp this year .   I rode a 5:40 in 2005  and that was with LSD way of training before coming to EN so after several years on the EN juice,  looking   forward to this year,

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                thanks,
