Swim workout ABP? Hopefully this one works.

I don't know what happened with the other attempts to post this topic. Can't figure out how to remove them. Sorry.

You know how we get suggestions to add some amount of ABP time at the end of the bike workouts if we can? I don't know if anyone else here does this but since I need lots of swim training in my continuing rehab of my shoulder I came up with a game I play with the clock. I'm sure others have thought of it but I call it "chasing down the clock."

My swim test came out to showing that my 100 yds time over the TT is 1:54. (Yeah, I know. Told ya I need the work.) I use that as a sort of guideline for how fast to do this game at the end of the swim workouts if I'm not feeling too wasted and I have the time. After a little rest I'll start doing laps again (sometimes plain swimming, sometimes with a buoy depending on if my legs want a break) starting on a ##:00 reading on the clock. To keep my pushing I'll glance at the clock to make sure I'm knocking off at least a few seconds off an even minute for each lap. So at the end of each 50 the clock reads something like :56, then :50, then :46, etc... I'll set a target time in my head as to when I want to end the exercise. If I want to chase down a full minute on the clock I keep going until the clock shows :00 again on the lap I just completed. After some of the workouts that kill me that means I've added on another 11-12+ laps of swimming steadily. Not slacking off but not at threshold pace either. I really want a 32 minute HIM swim without staggering up onto the beach in a delirious haze. Heh.

You can adjust the game however you want all depending on how fast your 50's are at the end of the workout.

  • Good idea. I think I'll start doing that, too. I'm 2:14/100.
  • Thats kinda cool...I think swimming in the pool has a real element of making the work/time creative....I always like to do and extended swim at the end of my workouts at least once per week...and my goal is that the avg. is faster than my warmup pace....this would be a cool way to structure it!..thanks....good swimming.
