Half Marathon Warm Up - What is your routine?

Looking for advice/insight on a good warm up routine prior to a 1/2 marathon.

  • My philosophy is the shorter the race the longer the warm up and the longer the race, the shorter the warm-up. I am good with running a couple of miles really easy with some strides at the end up to race pace that are 30sec in duration, then I do some range of motion drills and line up.
  • For 1/2 I run 5-10 minutes, do 3-4 20-30s strides with 45-60s rest, then run 5-10 minutes at mp building to hmp by end. Try to be done 10-15 minutes prior to start of race.
  • I go about 15 min or so too. An easy warm up with about a few 200 pick ups a 400 then a walk to the start line enough to get lose and break a sweat nothing much. The HM start for me is running SLOW by about 15 sec per mile for a few miles then I'm nice and warmed up. I then run 20 sec per mile faster for a few miles to make up for that time I lost then the rest is what ever I have left without blowing up. Good for a neg split too.
  • I bang my head against a port-a-potty until I wake up, then go jog for 10 minutes with a couple of strides.
  • Up and eating early enough to clear my bowel before the race - I can't run when I am full of sh#%!

Run easy 10-15 minutes to get my aerobic engine going, then walk to start. No strides or hard efforts because I don't want to burn any extra glycogen before the race.

For the first 1-2 miles, I gradually ease into my HM pace. Start pushing harder by mile 10. Let it all go after 12....

Finish line: smile for the cameras and fist pump the crowd for some noise!
  • For a half marathon distance I do a really limited warm-up. Jog for 5 minutes to get the blood flowing and elevate the HR a bit. That said, I'm one of those people who doesn't do much of a warmup in general.
  • I do a warm up like most folks above. Closely resembles Brenda's the most. 10-15 minute warm up at easy pace. Then a few pick ups and some drills/stretching.

    I carry a drink and 2 gels.

I run even splits throughout, hanging on for dear life until the end image.
