Marathon post IM

I know this is generally not a good idea but with my newfound speed, I am finding myself in a realm of speed that I never knew I could attain.   So far I am doing well with my IMLP training such that the running paces are putting me in a position for a possible BQ.  I know 5k does not predict marathon but my current 5k vDot would have me finishing 10-12 minutes faster than BQ.  I figure the fudge factor of using a 5k is within this margin of error (I will be doing a 1/2 mary in 4 weeks so I will know better).  Now would it be unreasonable to train for a late mary such as Toronto which is 3 months after Lake Placid or will I be too mentally/physically drained to try this.

  • Go for it. Who knows mentally/physically what you can handle but I'm liking that time line real nice image
  • Kar-Ming I did that in 2011 following IMLP with the MDI marathon in October. Not a PR but close (less than 4 minutes back).

    10/16/2011 MDI Marathon - 3:34:30 Boston Qualifier (3rd)
    7/24/2011 IMLP - 12:40:04 First IM

The big thing will be how you feel and how running feels several weeks out from LP after a solid R&R break. If you're still feeling flat, I wouldn't push it.
  • Kar-Ming... Um, i am doing Marine Corp and NYC after IMLP. i am doing them as fun runs and not races.
  • 12 weeks is certainly enough time to recover from the IM. You may not be in peak condition AFTER the marathon, but you should do pretty well during the marathon.
  • Thanks for the replies. I am going to go for it!! Figure even if I am not in peak, I have a 20-30 sec/mile cushion.
  • make sure you are really recovered after IMLP before starting to train for your Marathon. You will feel good before you're ready to start run training so be careful but 3 months is a good amount of time. Good Luck.
