TACX VS COMPUTRAINER .... WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE???

The question (doubt) is: is the COMPUTRAINER an upgrade? What do I get from COMPUTRAINER that other rollers don't offer?
Looking for haus wisdom to help me make p my mind!!!!

  • The Wahoo Fitness KICKR is going to render the Computrainer obsolete, IMO.

I'd look at that way before I'd look at a CT.  In fact... I did.

  • The primary advantage of CT over other trainers is the ability to easily define in advance specific, custom workouts. Using third party computer program such as Trainer Road or TrainingPeaks Erg+, you can design a workout, and the CT will modify its resistence during the wko so you have to pedal at pre defined watt levels. The Wahoo Kicker suppsedly does the same thing via iPhone, iPad, etc, but since its been out less than a month, there is not yet real world experience.

TACX eg Bushido allows you to manually alter resistence during the course of wko, but has no ability to pre program a custom wko, although there are some stock programs available, not nearly the flexibility of the other two.

My advice ... Wait until summer to see what the first purchasers of Kickr have to say, then decide between the two.
  • Question is... Do you already own a powertap/bike based power system. What are you going to do with the power? Train on it? Race with it? Both? Need more info... IMHO, it's silly to train with power or a power based trainer and then not race with it on your bike. If you do have a power-based system on board bike already, better to just get a good roller and trainer road and you're 80% ahead of the rest of the crowd. That being said, I have a Computrainer and like Al said above, it works seamlessly with TR and the prescribed workouts and I' stronger for it (read, 25 watt bump in first 6 weeks). Again YMMV ??
  • Thanks for the advice guys.
@Bob: already placed a reservation for the Wahoo just in case ...
@Al: great advice as always!!!! FYI the TACX FORTIUS MULTIPLAYER does allow to design the workouts and uploads easily to WKO.
@Jason: I train and race with power but I use a trainer at my weekend house in the mountains where I can MTB but not road bike
  • We have computrainers.         Use mine a lot.                The calibration thing is tedious, and I worry about blowing trainer tires.  (I put in a lot of trainer miles so I go through trainer tires).                So will get KICKR, once folks have tested is for a bit.
