Infinit and gels

I have used Infinit for all my IM's I am thinking of using Infinit for the bike and switching to gels for run. Has anyone done this and if so did you have any stomach problems? Yhanks

  • I used Infint plus gels and chews and waffles on the bike then gels/Gatorade or whatever on the run with no issues. But everyone is different so best to practice the nutrition during training and see what works/doesn't work.
  • I've always been a Gu-on-the-run guy, and since joining EN have been using Infinite on the bike. Have not had any issues of any significance in any of my races. For me, being mindful of my gut helps me avoid or minimize GI distress.
  • Hi Dave!

That's EXACTLY what I do. Infinit exclusively on bike supplemented with Salt Sticks, with something solid like a Stinger Waffle at Special Needs, and Powerbar Gels on the run. I stop drinking Infinit when I know I'm ~30' from T2, then I have a gel on my way out of T2, and I generally have one gel every 30' on the run, alternating gels and Salt Sticks every 15'.... So I'll have a gel on my way out of T2, Salt Stick 15' into my run, gel at 30', Salt Stick at 45', gel at 60' and so on... I haven't had any stomach issues at all, but take that with a grain of salt as I've only done two IM's! I totally second Kim's advice to practice during training and Race Rehearsals!
  • Thanks, I have used Infinit exclusively on bike/run. My issue is when I get to the run I crave something else besides Infinit. Kim we are practically neighbors I live in Broad Brook.
  • I find gels too rich for the run. Coke, water, Perform is my diet on IM runs. Jimmy Ricotello @ the Tucson rally commented that ... There's no reason to take the whole gel packet, just half is fine for him on the run, for the same reason, too many calories in the stomach all at once.
  • Tried Infinit didnt like it... I want easy=whats on the course and some real food for the bike...

For the run.... I use power bar gels in a flask , 1 sip every 3 miles getting about half a gel or 50-60 calories per sip ! You can even throw in 3-4 salt stick in the flask and eliminate the additional need of fumbling with those (the salt actually improves the taste at that point in your day) , have a second flask in SN.
  • I use Infinit on the bike supplemented with a couple Powerbars and a couple of salt sticks. For the run this past yr I went almost exclusively with Infinit Napalm. I really like the Napalm in that it is a lot thinner than gu's or gels and taste totally different than the Infinit drink. The only downside is you need to run with a fuel belt that holds gel flasks, but I do that anyways to carry extra salt and a couple of emergency gels.
  • I use Infinit on the bike with a bike formula, then switch to a combo of an Infinit run formula combined with Powergels (which are recommended due to higher sodium levels). I take the Infinit light on the run and like Al mentioned, don't always take all the of the gel at once. Best as mentioned is to try out a few different strategies now and then make sure you train with it so your body becomes comfortable with it... Good Luck...
  • just to remind, the Core Diet race way.           Perform only to drink.            Power bars and gels on the bike.   Power bar gels on the run.       If tolerated, there are good arguments that this is the best way to go.
