What number do we use to calculate our wts/kg

Hi kids, did a search, but not finding this info.  What number do we use to calculate the wattss/kg.  I am assuming it is the FTP number, and if it is, is it the FTP number before the 5% is taken off or after. Thanks for your help.

  • I believe it's the FTP number. The 5% is part of the calculation to arrive at the FTP number based on variation between 20' and true 60' test. So, after the 5% is taken off.
  • Yup, it's what Ryan said. If you think about it, your FTP is not the number you get after 20', because that's an overapproximation. FTP is "supposed" to be the wattage that you can sustain for a 60' TT, but since most of us don't do these outside (and would go crazy doing this inside), we use shorter intervals and extrapolate. So, the 2 x 20' needs to include the 2' recovery and the 20' number is guestimated to be 105% of your true FTP.
  • What Peter said about what Ryan said.
  • What Russell said about what Peter said about what Ryan said and also what Richard said...
  • Yeah. What he said.
  • It depends, right? You can take ANY power and devide it by weight to give you watts / kg. You can express your FTP in watts /kg, but also your VO2, your sprint, your zone 3 effort, etc etc etc. it just depends on what you want to compare it to.
  • yep what they said B

Exactly ... You see in pro tour commentary that someone is doing, say, 6.2 w/kg up a big climb, meaning his actual output for that section. This was a big deal when people started seeing 6.7 w/ kg over extended segments, and that was felt to be physiologically impossible.
  • FTP / your body weight in KG
  • Thanks everyone, as you know, that is what I thought. Just to be clear, this was a question by Steve, who did not want to ask because he knew it was somewhere in the forums, but I searched and could not find it, so I knew you guys/gals would help me out. Love ya.
  • "Outed" will take three hail Mary's and forgive Brenda for being right as usual!!
