Alternatives to Garmin?

Hi. I have a relatively new 310XT, which costs about $500 w/all the accessories a triathlete will need (e.g., foot pod, cadence meter, quick release kits)...unless you count the value of your time chatting w/Garmin support, doing a "master reset" every few weeks, and then re-configuring the unit to your preferences...AGAIN. First unit had a bad GPS (acknowledged problem by Garmin). Second unit kept "un-pairing" w/my computer, requiring a master reset (another acknowledged problem). Third unit now also "un-pairing" and sent back to the factory for a replacement.  When the new one comes, I'm selling it on eBay and looking for a replacement brand. Recommendations??

  • You probably want to stick with something that is ant+ compatible for maximum compatibility, so probably not polar. The DC rainmaker has a lot of info on his web site. There is the Magellan and i think a timex.

Unfortunately I think garmin is pretty much the leader. I have owned a 305, 310xt, 910xt, and a Swim and haven't had any problems, so maybe just bad luck?
  • I hear ya Joe. Been having known issues with my 310 as well, including the date reverting back to 1985 or whatever, not getting past the "garmin" screen, and lastly not uploading to anything. Got fed up with the unreliability and got an ege 500. I know it's not all-in-one and still garmin, but I've heard much better things about the edge. For the run, I picked up the Timex Run Trainer to try something new. Went with he original over the 2.0 (cheaper, hopefully more tried & true) and so far so good. Timex also has the global trainer for bike/run combo. Second the DC Rainmaker site for awesome reviews.
  • 310 is just a dated platform. Get a newer Garmin unit (910xt or 500/510) and you will be stoked!
  • Not much to turn to beyond Garmin. I have to say, I see very few Garmin haters out there and there's a reason they're the leader...the products are damn good. I have a 910xt, a 500 and 800 and a 405. Oh, and a Garmin Swim and a 2 FR60's. I use them all consistently for different things and in different places. I have had some problems with the 405 over the years but it has served me well overall. The 910xt is excellent as an all-in-ine and I use it when racing along with the Edge 500.
