Powertap and trainer - mph problem

When I'm riding my trainer, my powertap with garmin edge 500 shows me doing 30-40mph, when I'm only around 200 watts.  While I know I'm incredibly powerful , I doubt very seriously I'm doing 40mph.  Anyone else experience this problem?

  • sounds weird to me but then I pay very little attention to speed, espeically when I am not actually moving. You may want to look and see what the setting on the Garmin is as to where it is reading speed/distance from. If I am remembering right usually I will be going faster on the road than the numbers indicate on the trainer. Good luck.
  • Since you have power just ignore speed on the trainer. Dependng on how much pressure is in my tire, the force of the roller against the tire and what gear I'm in, my trainer speed at FTP can vary from 15 to 35 mph. It means nothing compated to real world speed.
  • Right. I do ignore it, just wondering what the issue was really. I like to track my mileage and that kind of makes it difficult. I probably shouldnt be counting trainer miles anyway.
  • Branan do you use WKO or some other software for looking at data files?
