Run ?

Running Test next week.

I've run the first two running tests indoors, when I run my last test next week I should run indoors as well, correct, for an apples to apples comparison?

Next ? when I run indoors on treadmill 2 % grade, my zone 5 was 7.3 on treadmill, on the treadmill pace conversion at 2% it shows 7:52 pace per mile. When I ran last sunday my zone 5 was 7:30'ish, even my z1 pace is faster on road than tmill. Is this normal?

Thanks for your help, John S.

  • no not necessarily is to weather's nice and you can get outside go for it find yourself a nice place to run outside that's flat someplace where you can replicate the run further down range at the same location. winter is over come on outside and get your new numbers your races will not be inside.
  • John,

I typically do the test where I started indoors but this is just so I can see the improvement and compare to the start of the OS. I then have to perform another test outside at the start of the next block. As David mentions the race is outdoors so you can get out and do the test there.

Also I don't find that big of a gap between my treadmill running and outdoors. That's why you do the test on the treadmill at the start of the OS to ensure you are not working too hard using your outdoor running pace.

  • @John - I do most of my runs outdoors, and usually not on flat roads. I have been doing the bricks 2x week on the TM for the OS because its right next to my trainer and with the weather, makes it easy to just move from one to the other...these are short runs (<30'). Since I wasn't use to running on the TM, I printed out N online form that would translate pace/speeds taking incline into consideration. I found right away that if I stuck to the prescribed TM paces, my HR was off the chart and I felt like I was working so hard that I couldn't hold my z3 z4 paces. However, when outside, I can hit my prescribed numbers and have a garmin watch to verify...and that's with some hills!

There is no doubt that the TM doesn't translate well in terms of what you think you might be pacing at...I have learned to go by HR rather than the chart, and now know what levels to set the TM at. That being said, as weather warms up, my TM will not be getting any use!

Hope that helps to answer your question.
