Ironman Ashville ... Ho hum!

I've followed the thread about Asheville's bid for a new southeastern ironman in Sep. Compared to previous discussions before NYC or Tahoe were formally announced this one seems to have gone flat quickly. And Iwas surprised that no one else on EN started a thread on it. Dan Empfield seems to think this would be an outstanding venue, but given the lack of excitement in the community, I wonder whether this is the right location, or whether we have really achieved market saturation. What does the haus think?

  • Maybe EN has reached a very happy place where members don't read ST? I know I don't and am the better and happier for it :-)

Sorry, great riding around Asheville, would make a good venue
  • Seems like it would be a great place to hold a race. I'd sign up for it.

  • Paul,

It was definitely interesting to hear about that poll and all the negativity from those voting.  I did not go to the web page but perhaps the tacks are already out from the locals.  Maybe this is just people being logical.  That is why do we need IM, the extra hassles of road closures when is already a very busy tourist long weekend.  What will the race bring in for the dollars the town has to pay WTC for the race?

In the end I know I would choose a different race if there was not good support for the race.  The September time frame could work for me but I know nothing of Asheville.

  • I would do this race in a heartbeat (at least, in the year that I choose to go long).

Would def work well for EN Ninja Style Execution. Meaning....would prob be a very tough bike, either making or braking the run.

September would be a good time up there. Could be warm, I guess. But, I've heard that September is usually past that last late summer blast up there.

Being in Atlanta, I love the idea of being able to choose between a flat course like IMFL and a hilly course like Asheville, all without flying to the venue.
  • Would be interested. Family in the state. Progressive community. Hills not good for bike for big guy though.
