Cycling bike computer

So my wife has decided to get back on her tri bike.  She currently has a very old bike computer on it which is not working. She has no power and runs with a Garmin 305.  She expressed to me that her 'bike thingy' was not working so that's my cue to get it working.  She wants a new gadget as I hook LYC up every time I ride.  So here I am.

She could use the 305 but are there some other alternatives like a cat eye or such that I should consider.  Is there a cadence sensor to link up the 305 and that's my solution. I'm not sure she would use a cadence metric, data is not necessarliy something for her.  I do download her running workouts and point thing out for her.  Having said that I hope to direct her to use as much information as possible.

I'm the first to admit that I'm not sure what her needs are or even what's out there for bike computers so I'd just appreciate some options and probably low cost as who know if she will keep riding.

  • If she doesn't care about GPS then just get a Cateye or other very simple bike computer. Probably less than $50

  • "She expressed to me that her 'bike thingy' was not working so that's my cue to get it working"

Love that.  My wife (who refuses to ride except on the trainer for fear of crashing) calls the shifters "shifty things"!

  • You could get something cheap like this for $35 if you don't actually need it for much: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Planet-Bike-Protege-9-0-WIRELESS-black-bike-computer-/160587021056#vi-content

If you send an email to bicycledoctor@att.net They will sell you a:
--Garmin Edge 200 for $119.90 (this is a great computer and will have everything except Power which she doesn't need, but you'd also need an ANT+ cadence sensor if you want cadence. I have an extra Cadence Sensor I could mail you for free if you want it...)
--Garmin Edge 500 for $179.90 (these might be sold out)
    --Garmin Edge 510 for $279.90
  • Having used it since 2006 or 7, I'm a big fan of the Forerunner 305 - rock solid, full of all the metrics you could desire. Why pay $ if you already have that? Before I got my Joule/PowerTap, I'd put it the handlebar with the attachment provided. I learned long ago to only provide electronic stuff my spouse specifically asks for; so if she doesnt care about cadence, dont try to make her. But if you must, for $35-40US, here's the 305 cadence solution (wireless):

  • Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.
