Bike Transport Options for upcoming race

Need to know what are bike transport options for IM texas.  It appears all of the TBT in my area are full (huge rookie mistake).  Who knew?

  • Don't commit to anything just yet, John. I talked to TBT customer service today and they said they are having an issue with their website and that there should be open space. They said to try back in a day or two.

If not, I'm going with a Pika Packworks EEP soft side case. Its gotten good reviews here and DCRainmaker uses on that looks identical to it.
  • I would also carry the bike myself. Did that at IM 70.3 Cali for the first time, will do this again for IM 70.3 SG. It's a simple process, like checking a suitcase in the airport.
  • @Ben what set up did you use and how much of the bike did you have to take apart
  • We like our pika. Fair amount of disaassembly.
  • Here is a thread about the pika

I used it for the Tuscon rally. It was the first time taking my bike apart and putting it back together. Had some problems with the rear deraileur when putting it together the first time but the second time it went much smoother. It was nice being able to take it with me rather than having it shipped and being without it for several days before and after.
  • I bought a "compact" box from TriAll3Sports. It is far from "compact" but it does fit in the backseat of a car. I've used it several times and really like it. If I was better at taking apart my bike (or, rather, putting it back together!) I'd take it to my local shop and have them ship it via UPS. I almost always FedEx my disc wheel to races...costs about $12 and the local shop gives me a wheel box for free.
  • John, Bonzai Sports just popped up as available on the TriBikeTransport website. I say 'just' because I've been logging on every hour or so and checking since last night. I'm now registered and confirmed (3 emails to prove it). If you want to use TBT, I'd hop on it now.

I have one of those hardshell trapezoid suitcases. I have a large size P2 TT bike, and take out wheels and seatpost. I remove the stem off the fork and pedals and that's it. So i open the case, put down wheel 1, then frame, then wheel 2 and fill up open space with my seatpost, helmet, wetsuit, tools, clothing etc. it takes some time, but is essentially pretty easy.
