Road Bike or Tri Bike on Trainer?

I dropped my race bike off last week before I took a weeklong trip.  I came back today and went to pick up my race bike only to be told that I have a broken piece in my seatpost which means I will not be able to ride it for my RR#1 tomorrow.  My dilemma now is do I do RR#1 on my road bike or my old tri bike which is set up on my Computrainer?

Road Bike: I have never ridden more than 4 hours on and which I am not comfortable on.  I also do not have aerobars on them.

Old Tri bike:  Comfortable set-up indoors.  And yes, I can handle the 6 hours on the trainer.  I've been doing all my long rides on it and have in the past done 6 hours.

I appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.  I guess I am just worried that I won't get the same benefit of doing my RR#1 on the trainer as opposed to riding outside.

Thanks,

Joanna

  • Why can't you ride the old tri bike outside?
  • It's not set-up to ride outside anymore.  image
  • The question is which one best mimics the actual race conditions you will face, and which best meets the purpose of the RR. Since you are in NY, I would vote for the trainer because the indoor temp will much better approximate IM Texas, you can dial in your nutrition for warmer conditions, and practice staying in the aerobars.
  • How long until you get the seatpost fixed? The timing of the first RR isn't critical and can be rolled forward a week or so.
  • Just to close the loop on this thread.

My bike is still not fixed and likely will not be done till this weekend. Because I have RR#2 to do on April 27, I had to do RR#1 this past weekend. And yes, I did 6 hours on the Computrainer on the IMTX course then followed by an hour run.

Thanks to all who posted and viewed!
