Road Bike or Tri Bike on Trainer?

I dropped my race bike off last week before I took a weeklong trip.  I came back today and went to pick up my race bike only to be told that I have a broken piece in my seatpost which means I will not be able to ride it for my RR#1 tomorrow.  My dilemma now is do I do RR#1 on my road bike or my old tri bike which is set up on my Computrainer?

Road Bike: I have never ridden more than 4 hours on and which I am not comfortable on.  I also do not have aerobars on them.

Old Tri bike:  Comfortable set-up indoors.  And yes, I can handle the 6 hours on the trainer.  I've been doing all my long rides on it and have in the past done 6 hours.

I appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.  I guess I am just worried that I won't get the same benefit of doing my RR#1 on the trainer as opposed to riding outside.

Thanks,

Joanna

  • How long until you get your race bike back? As we've been told before the exact date of RR#1 isn't as critical as the match to race conditions. I would vote no to the road bike. Would be better to do either race or old tri bike outside if possible also. If all else fails, old tri bike on trainer, but man does that sound boring. Are you a power athlete or Hr?
  • They have to get the part from the dealer so it could take a while.  I will hope they get it within a couple of weeks.

And I know that RR#1 is not as vital as #2 but all the same I would like to do it as close to the training regimen as possible.  I am 99% sure that I am going to do the ride on my trainer.  I just can't imagine doing that long of a ride on my road bike.

    I'm a power athlete.

  • Great on the power! One of the keys to the RR ride is riding steady and its just a tougher feat to pull off on the open road than on a trainer. Would be really great to get RR#2 done outside on your race bike to dial it all in. Good Luck on your race!
