Indoor vs outdoor FTP

This is more of a hypothetical question as race is to close to change approach. Last year my outdoor FTP was 279 based on 60 minute test. When testing indoors could barely hold 250 for 20 minutes. This year indoor FTP was 285. Never got chance to test outdoors. What if current FTP is low?

Then you will be able to have a better run.  (in this case your "actuall TSS" will be lower.  Example wrong FTP of 100, 1 hr ride @FTP = 100TSS...but 'real FTP' was 150, same one hour ride yields a TSS of 44.5)

  • What about your race rehearsal data? How you feel and run after going race distance at race power levels should tell you a lot about how accurate your FTP is.
  • Well since you don't have the time to test for an accurate number, and knowing you, you want to be as high end as possible. ride the number you brung to the race and have trained with. It's more about execution at this point IMHO focus on the four keys. You can always always always pick it up way late in the race if you feel the feel and if you burn your upfront matches it becomes more of a challenge to not slow down.
  • What race is this for and when is it?

  • @rich. Not for any race just wondering. Planning on using indoor FTP for race.
  • Why would you use indoors FTP for an outdoor race? Unless the race is tomorrow, you have time to test/estimate an outdoor FTP.

  • @Al. Today was first RR. Hard to use that data as nothing went right except for starting to get feel for flattening the hill. Even so VI was still 1.13 couple that with poor nutrition and you have failure

Totally agree with this. You have penty of time until the race...no way you should race with an indoor FTP, particularly if you know your indoor and outdoor differ.
  • Dude, you need to focus on what your doing if you have the time to test make it so, I thought you were racing like next week.
  • Thanks guys. Have time to test but clearly have other more pressing issues to focus on.
