Bike trainer resistance

Hi all

I have a Cyclops Fluid trainer and over the last couple of sessions it feels like there is too much resistance. Initially I chalked it to tired legs, but my runs are going really well, I nailed a tempo workout yesterday. And riding the bike outside feels fine, bike chain is lubed, air pressure is correct,in fact nothing changed.

So I conclude the bike trainer is being mean. Does it need any sort of maintenance? Quick googling didn't bring up anything.  I did buy it in '05 or 06 so it is kind of old, but barely used (maybe 5-6 times tops), until this year for the JOS. Should I just get a new trainer?

  • Do you train with power? If so, I wouldn't worry about it and just go with what the power meter says.

I'm assuming stuff like drum tension and tire are the same - and anything else that might cause things to be different from one session to the next.

I have a fluid2 trainer, and have been using it a lot over the past year and a half, and haven't noticed anything with regards to changing resistance (once it warms up). However, I know that the original fluid model had some issues, and thus why they came out with the fluid2. If I were you, I'd contact CycleOps support and see what they say - I've heard of them giving people replacement drums, and not just because of a faulty unit. So you might get lucky.

  • No at this point IMHO , make sure tire pressure is good b4 each ride adjust the trainer to touching the wheel not cranked down to tight. A lot of folks put to much pressure on the wheel and the heat build up can cause flats. Try this and evaluate, a new trainer will tell you replace me with a bunch of noise.
  • Thanks guys. I'll call Cyclops and see what they have to say.
