Week before Raleigh 70.3 question

My husband won an award through work which came with an all inclusive trip to Boca Raton Resort and spouses are highly encouraged to join, which sounds like the trip a trip of a lifetime, right? Well, it just so happens to fall the week before my very first HIM in Raleigh. I'm thinking I could go down from Wed-Friday night, fly back, and be well rested and ready to drive to Raleigh Saturday morning (I'm in Charlotte.) Any one care to offer their advice/ease my anxiety on this? Thanks gang.

  • Well it is taper week, so you will be cutting back the workouts a good bit and would normally be resting. Since its your first, your probably most focused on a good finish which will be a PR anyway. I'd go for it, eat right, rest plenty. Stay plenty hydrated. I live in Raleigh and the course will probably be hot, and its a hilly one. Check the race site schedule and see about the "sometimes mandatory pre race checkin" meetings Sometimes those can make getting checked in a pain. Any other questions about this course, I'll try to help. I ride the course often, and will be running the run course more as time gets closer.
  • @Dave Thank you! I will make sure to keep and eye out for the updates on IM website. Good to know you know the course. I am hoping to get up there soon to ride with the IOS group, unless you know of another group that ride it on Saturdays?
  • It's taper/rest week anyway so I agree with Dave. Go and have fun in Florida.

Just make sure you get to athlete and bike check-in in time on Saturday. Don't worry about missing the mandatory meetings. There's nothing mandatory about them. I have done over 10 WTC events and have yet to attend one of their meetings.
  • I'd check the website just to be safe. I've done Augusta twice and they would NOT let you pick up your packet until you had a stamp on your hand indicating you had been to the mandatory meeting. Plus this race is a point to point race and the logistics are going to be tricky. So, go to the meeting and find out where to be when. I rode the course with the Inside Out group a few weeks back. It was worth it.
