Conti 4000S Cheap

I just ordered 6 Conti 4000S from http://www.probikekit.com for a grand total of $196 including (free) shipping.  They are UK based, so not sure how long it will take to get here, but a net of around $33 per tire is a great price.  Base price is $36, but they have an additional 5% or 10% off depending on how much you spend.  Check the front page for the discount code.  No idea how long this is good for or if the discount code changes. :-)

  • Be prepared for them to take a long time to get them.. I ordered two tires from them on April 3rd and it is now nearly two weeks and they still haven't arrived.  They were mailed International Priority Mail too..  I'm sure they are stuck in some shipping container in the middle of the Atlantic right now.   One more thing I found out from my LBS the other day is that if there is some defect with the tires bought outside the US the US manufacturer will not cover the warranty on them.  Apparently this is how US manufacturers are protecting their product lines and revenue from cheaper retailers and import prices so they can keep their business.  Want the warranty on bike parts.. buy from the US only..

  • Well dang I was all over them till Darren's post.
  • I have ordered plenty of tires and tubes from PBK over the last couple of years. I even ordered a Zipp disc from them last year.

I normally have my order in two weeks. Only once did I end up waiting for a month.

It's not a place where you can get something quick but it's well worth the two week wait for the great prices. It's also the only place I have been able to find the short stemmed Michelin latex tubes that I use.
  • Bob-
Have you ever received a bad or less then par order??
  • Anyone have any experience with wiggle.com. They have the Conti 4000s for $37.81.

    Bob-

Have you ever received a bad or less then par order??

Nope.  Everything has been exactly as ordered and in great condition.  They usually ship tires and tubes in plastic mailing bags (I would assume to save on shipping costs) so the boxes for the tires and tubes might be a little beaten up from their overseas journey and whatever customs does with the packages.  Not a big deal.

  • I've bought from both PBK and Wiggle. PBK has been pretty popular for a while, it's definitely a reputable and safe place to buy from, you just can't order anything you need ASAP because of the international shipping and occasional customs delays.

I've only ordered from Wiggle once and the experience was fine. It's definitely a legit company, no scam or anything, just the same deal, you need patience on the shipping.
  • PBK is legit, although it can take time. Can someone make me smart on the difference between the 4000S and the 4000s? I understand the latter is the one everyone is raving about.

  • Paul, do you mean the difference between the 4000 and the 4000S?

There is actually a difference between the 4000 and the 'S' variety, although I'm not 100% sure what it entails. Other than that though, 4000S, 4000s, 4000 S, 4000 s are all the same thing. The official name is the Grand Prix 4000 S, the other variations are just people's shorthands.

The only variation I've seen on the 4000 S itself is a foldable vs a 'normal' variety, but the website has no mention of that, it just lists the two widths of 23 and 25mm and says both are foldable.

  • The 4000S is a black chili compound tire which is better in every way to the silica compound found in the 4000. The black version of the 4000 (which is only available in 700x20 and 650x23) is identical to the 4000S. All other 4000 tires are the silica compound and come in a variety of colors and sizes.
  • William, I noticed in the Wiki that you wrote a section titled: Benefits of Race Day Tire Selection. You compared as "best" the Vittoria Evo Corso tires to the "good" selection, the Michelin Pro Race 3s. Here you purchased the Conti 4000S. Are these “better” than the tires you compared in the Wiki?

  • Jim - This article was written a while back. Long story short, there has been some recent data out that suggest that the 4000 S are a new tire of choice...at least if you have the wider style rims like the C2 or the newer Zipps. Interestingly enough, the RR is low on the 4000 S, but the aerodynamics appear to be the ruling factor. If you troll around on ST, you'll find people that think the Evo Corso tires are "fragile". I have not had any bad experiences with them at all.

This is an article from FLO cycling, who make a rim that is wide, very much like the C2 and Zipp rims: http://flocycling.blogspot.com/2013/04/flo-cycling-flo-30-wind-tunnel-results.html

I have seen it cited that Zipp now recommends the 4000 S, but I have not seen that in the original, so take it with a grain of salt.

Another anecdote - superfast gearhead and former EN-er Matt Ancona has switched to the 4000 S. He rides the Zipp FC's.

  • William, Thanks. Good data to have.

  • I have not yet received the tires (tyros?) - it has been only 3 days! - but I did want to let people know that I received a notice that they had been shipped within 36 hours of my order.
  • I placed my PBK order for the Conti 4000S tires on April 8th and received them yesterday. So it took 9 days from order to delivery.
  • I ordered my tires and received a shipping notification a day or two later.. I have yet to receive them. I'm going to give them a call.. Nutz..

  • Just got off the phone with PBK.. They don't have a tracking number on my item but confirmed that it did ship. They said that if it doesn't arrive by May 1st that they will assume it is lost and will either replace them or give me a full refund. Nice customer service.. Ugh! More waiting. I just might run to my LBS and get some as I'm tired of having to jockey my wheels between my bikes.
  • Good price was seen on Amazon right now too... I didn't verify
  • Just got my PBK order of the 4000s and some Cross tires today.  Ordered them on the 15th.  That is not bad at all considering the distance they just traveled.  Thanks for the tip William!

  • I got them last week on Amazon.  Around the same price as PBK.  Gonna put them on my new Cosmic Carbones!

  • The gods must be crazy or they were impressed with my Half Mary performance yesterday and decided to reward me.. Today, finally my running shoes and tires sent from the UK arrive (nearly three weeks), plus EN decals showed up and then my 404 FCs and Speedfill A2 arrived at the LBS.  Not sure if I'll order by PBK again.
