Best Salt Tablet/Products
So evidently I'm a heavy salty sweater. I'm suppose to take 1100 mg of Na each hour during a race. What is the best method to accomplish this and what are the best products to use? Will be drinking about 2 bottles of Perform an hour plus gel or 1/2 power bar every 30 minutes

I'm with you when it comes to Hammer products. How anyone can use Perpetuem is beyond me. It literally spoils after a couple of hours and tastes like sweat wrung out from a sock. But Endurolytes are the biggest joke of all their products. Salt Sticks and S-Caps have like 5x the electrolytes of Endurolytes for the same price... and somehow Endurolytes are the market sales leader.
Before I recommend a salt tablet, I have clients to a sweat trial and determine their fluid and sodium needs. Then, I determine how much sodium they are getting from other sources (drinks, gels, etc) then use salt tablets to fill the gap. I pick a tablet based on how big the gap is. I typically divide the gap by 2 or 3 so that they can take pills every 20 or 30 minutes.
Then I'd do 3 S!Caps per hour (one every 20 minutes) with water.
IMCDA is a great race! We actually have opened an Ironman Sports Medicine Institute in The Woodlands. I'll be up there Mondays starting next week (4/29). If Monday's don't work I'm in town Tuesday/Thursday/Friday. I can do race nutrition plans, daily nutrition, etc. Her's a link to services and pricing (nutrition is towards the bottom): http://ironman.memorialhermann.org/performance-improvement/pricing-and-packages/. If you want to make an appointment, you can PM me or call 713.704.9664.
Am I the only one who has been able to achieve my sodium objectives with Infinit?
I've made a commitment this season to (try to) combine the hydration and the nutrition. I've been making great gains in my diet, and I'm trying to wean myself off of "fake food"- those so-called nutrition bars and chews and jelly beans and so forth.. Right now, I'm just experimenting: I bought one bag of custom Infinit blend with extra sodium (it's called Purple Drank- shouts out to Lil' Wayne and all our Houston athletes!) and one bag of Napalm. I've been alternating between every other week, but can't decipher a major performance advantage yet. I bring back in a little Perpetuem a couple times a month, just to remind me how terrible it really is. I have problems.
Anyways, I've cranked up the sodium slider in my Infinit. And in TX, where's it's already in the 80's, it's worked well on both my long runs and rides. I carry the new LG energy gels (which are excellent BTW) but usually don't need them until 3+ hours.
I use the Core-Diet approach.
On the bike I use Infinit plus power bars for the first 4 hours and then Infinit and gels — with Infinit giving me around 600 mgs of Sodium per hour. Obviously the power bars and gels have more Sodium than that.
I use Infinit for the run, the same mixture as the bike but a different flavour.
BTW, I am in awe of your Race Reports!
I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question but has anyone just added table salt to their regular sport drink instead of salt tabs etc? 1/2 tsp of table salt has 1000mg of sodium.
Satish: Table salt is made up of sodium (Na) and chloride (cl) molecules. Only 40% of table salt is Na which is what you need. Adding it to your sports drink can throw the osmolarity off, but you can always try it and see it it works for you.
If the osmolarity is too high (too many solutes or molecules in the solution) your body will have problems absorbing it. That means, in general, it has to get fluid into your stomach do dilute it to a level to allow it to be absorbed. This additional fluid = GI distress in the form of sloshy stomach, bloating, etc.
