Selecting Powertap

I've trained all winter with virtual power and definitely want to continue using it out on the road. I got a power quote from Coach Rich a couple months ago and am looking at one of these options:

  • PT G3 hub built into a Zipp 101 aluminum training wheel: $1349
  • PT Pro+ hub built into a Velocity A23 aluminum training wheel: $999
I'm definitely not a money grows on trees person, so I'm of course wondering if the difference is worth the money. Any insight?

 Thanks!

  • @Rachel - If it were me, I would save the $350.  With that, you can get a nice (used) Joule 2.0 on eBay, as well as a Wheelcover to make your rear wheel a "disk" on raceday, and still $150 left over.
  • +1 Pro+ works just fine, no substantive difference from G3 in its electronics and power measuring. It's simply a bigger, heavier outer unit housing the innards. 3 ounces is three sips of water.
  • This definitely a place you can save cash. The difference in hubs to Al's point is a "weight weenie" issue for the most part. I would use the cash as Joe describes or perhaps consider a carbon wheel, but that will dent the budget.... image
