X50 Race Pacing/Strategy

I searched the wiki and forums and came up empty, If I missed something I apologize.   This race has several firsts for me.  Will be my longest to date, my first using power and first utilizing the EN strategy. This X50 (1mi swim/40 mi bike/9 mi run) will be my longest for both the bike and run, so unsure about pace.  I joined the EN Team in October and began training with power in January.   My initial thought was to comb to WIKI and forums and approach it like a HIM for practice as my A race is a HIM in September.   However, would much appreciate ANY and ALL advice on how to approach this race.

  • That sounds like an interesting distance ... it would take me about 3.5 hours to complete. I would approach the bike @ an IF of 0.85, maybe a touch higher in the second hour if I felt on form, then run at the top (fastest) end of my marathon pace. Swimming is always the same "as hard as you can go while still maintaining good form".

Or you could just treat it as an experiment for HIM pacing -  click on "Resources" above, then Racing Member Central and follow link to HIM execution info. Getting nutrition on the bike and in transitions will be critical.

  • Sounds like great advice, Thank You!
  • Yep, the X50 distance is hosted by one race company here in the DFW metroplex, and seems to be picking up popularity around here. The location that they usuall host it, can be HOT with no shade though, so temper yourself if you don't train in it regularly. Plus, Texas weather has been wacky lately.

Greg, where are you located? I'm in Dallas, near Lovers/75.
  • Scott, I am close to Lake Lewisville, just north of Flower Mound,  small town called Highland Village,  Are you doing Texas Man?
  • I know Highland Village, one of my best friends lives there.

Only races scheduled for me this year, thus far, are: CapTex, River Cities and IMMT. I don't race nearly as much as I used to, and have done TX Man before. Good luck at x50!
