IMSG 2010 week 2 run thread

Anyone do the run intervals yet?

Steve and I did ours with our track group today. 18 people total. Such a phenominal group of fun and positive people!

Plan says 3 x 1mile at TP/Z4 which for me is 6:51pace. I thought no freaking way before hand as my legs are still a wee bit sore from the long run Sunday. My peeps were doing 3 x 2000 @10K pace and they are faster than me already so I did that with them but hung behind. Ended up feeling ok and beating my FT pace and doing the 2000's in 8:15 which is 6:38ish pace. Funny how before a workout you are SURE you can't do it but then you totally surprise yourself.

Running in general feels great. Just the fatigue factor of increased training and the freaking Olympics at night and losing sleep from staying up too late is making me pooped out.

  • Yep, last week was completed. Holy Heck! It was tough but I did absorb it better than I had imagined. I had to change things up a bit and do the long run Thurs, the long bike Friday and then a moderate long bike with a brick on Saturday. Honestly, I can only swallow a day at a time. I keep tomorrow's workout out of my mind and just focus on the now. When I get home I'm not worried about tomorrow's workout, only on consuming calories and getting a good night sleep. So far, it's working but it's tough.

I ran the intervals yesterday on pavement. I find it challenging to estimate pace related to varying hill slopes. There's only one piece of flat realstate where I live (the track) and it's covered with 2 feet of snow. I guess in a way the rolling hills will more realistically reflect the IMSG run course so maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

I've been reading the other posts and it sounds like everyone making the transition with a little apprehension, I'm right there with you.

I forgot how much I love swimming. Twice per week with a long commute but it's coming along.
  • I am looking at the beginner plan, 2X1’ @ Z4/Z5. I have a hard time with pacing. I run early when it is still dark. I have two speeds slow and fast (at least fast for me). I start out at my slow speed, set the garmin to ¼ mile laps and just start running. After my warm up, go to fast speed for 4 beeps/laps on the garmin, then slow back down until the next interval. I know I need the five speeds based on vDot but unless I am on a treadmill, I don’t have them.  My vDot is 41.2, 7:45 pace.  My slow speed was about 8:50 and fast was 7:25. Technically, I hit the numbers the plan called for. I just did not know it until I downloaded the garmin after the run.

  • All I've done this week is the intervals and half my swim from yesterday. All of a sudden I'm not feeling so great. A little off in the head (no laughing!) I mean my balance has felt off, a bit sick to my stomach yesterday afternoon and evening, and generally tired. I think I'm just suffering from too full of a schedule and got myself all stressed out about work + training + home stuff. Decided to take today off completely which I think is the right call. I ended up sleeping for two hours in the middle of the day!! Planning to get back at it tomorrow, but if I still feel off I may hang back again. It only takes one full blackout that ends with a major traumatic injury to make you pay attention to stuff like this.
  • 3 x 1 mile today, all at top speed and then off to the pool for masters swim at noon. Starting to feel the general fatigue of ramping the volume over the past week and a half. Not sure I can last 10 more weeks till taper!

Two big bike days up next image

  • Did my TP run on Monday. I was totally shelled from Sat and Sun ride on the trainer though; my quads were sore and I just felt tired and out of it on both Monday and Tuesday. The TP run was not pretty, the first mile was about on pace, then the next repeat was just faster then HM pace; and the final "TP" mile was about 10" slower then the HM pace. The good news is I have found a place that I could run outside, it is a 1.2 mile ish loop in side a rec/pool/soccer plex ish place that is plowed. I have to run on the street but there is not a lot of traffic. The bad news is for tomorrow's long run I am going to have to get up before 5 so I have enough time to drive there and back. Got to do what you got to do, right?
  • Olivia- good call on listening to your body. Last years injury for you was so frightening. Came out of nowhere. Are you feeling better? You did the weekend indoor stuff at altitiude also. That must be a huge drain on a body also?

Tom- 3 x 1 mile FAST for you is scary fast!! - See you in 1 hour for our long rideimage

Wei- That snow is sketchy to run in. Building your mental six pack for sure.

I just got home from our Thursday am group run. 10 miles at easy for 2 miles( slower than Z1), 5 at tempoish( around Z2-Z3), 3 a little faster than Z1. Good news is my legs feel great and the tempo around 7:20-7:35 pace felt really good which is nice because last week I felt crappy. Maybe my body is absorbing the work. Who knows? I can't predict anymore when I will feel good.

My long run will be Sunday on trails!!!!!! The weather says rain this weekend so it will be muddy but I miss trails and plan to go anyway!

Anyone running the Thursday long run today? If so I hope it goes well.

  • OK....need team support....

My attempt at doing the long run ended thanks to further feelings of vertigo and instability. I got through my first HMP interval and then when I started the second one things got iffy. Tried stopping and restarting 3 times before I finally called it. I’m sad and frustrated. I really have the desire to do this training and I also know that I have the ability but I can’t push through when I’m not feeling stable. I think I get so fearful about what could happen that things may get worse when they don't need to.

The strangest thing is that I’m not sure what changed all of a sudden to bring this stuff on so consistently!! I got through all of the OS work with off and on issues with some balance stuff on the treadmill, but nothing that had me feeling off night and day like this. This is to the point that I’m not even sure if I’m making it up or if it’s real. You know, is it a mental 6-pack thing, or is it really something physical? Driving in to work this AM I had some nausea and then sitting in my meeting at 8:30 there were a couple of dicey moments when I thought I might have to put my head down. So it must be real…but I wish I knew what it was. (and the answer everytime I've had episodes of this sort over the years has never been pregnancy...i know that's what people always jump to...they did that when I broke my face....the second thing they jumped to was drugs or alcohol over consumption....admittedly both are possible, but not likely...especially now!)

Anyway, I’m going to the Dr. tomorrow morning so I can at least start investigating. At this point this stuff has gone on long enough to warrant having a look.

But don't count me out!! I plan to see how I feel later today or tomorrow afternoon and then try to get the long run in. But will not push it. If it isn’t meant to be it just won’t be.
  • Olivia: You're doing just what I'd recommend, "Stop training and to see a Doc ASAP!" I'm not sure what to think about it. I doubt you're psyching yourself out, if you're feeling like your are then something is off kilter. I know how tenacious you are and you've got me a little worried but I'm glad you're getting a medical opinion. Don't stress it now, just find out what's up. You're not going to loose any fitness with a few days out. I'm curious to find out what you learn tomorrow.
  • Olivia- oh my goodness!! We are here for you. Please let us know what the doctor says. Any correlation to last years symptoms that led to your fall. You just got home from your cabin. Same as last year? Just thinking outloud here.

I know you want to do the workouts. Seems physical and not mental.

I hope you get answers and relief soon.

    Bummed for you :-(

  • Olivia,  go see a doctor, wow! scary stuff. You're worse than Rich about getting stuff taken care of! Hope you get an answer and get better soon.

As to my week, 4 out of the 5 runs done according to plan. Missed one short brick as I extended a ride, so all ended well for the wee.

  • Week 2 ended well for me. Ran Long yesterday with a big group here in Nor Cal in the town of Livermore.30 people came out for the run. It was awesome. 14 miles that took us through vineyards and just a beautiful course. Everyone runs their own pace and the group I was in was about 8 people. They are such phenominal training partners. I had my speediest run to date this season for a long run. 14 miles in 7:30 avg. These peeps are fast and 2 of the miles they threw down 6:30's( my 5K pace), I thought they were trying to kill me. But I hung on somehow and feel great today.

The best part is come IM day, I just have to try and hold around 9:00m pace. Very cool!!
