Hi Maureen - I will be racing Eagleman but it will be my first time there. I've raced 5 other HIM's, with my 6th coming up this weekend. But I'm looking forward to the hype of the WTC brand. Good luck with your training.
Be prepared for it to be HOT. Last year it was barely wetsuit legal. Since the bike is so flat it is easy to push too hard and under hydrate. You will feel the effects on the run... It will most likely be 90+ degrees by the time you hit T2 and there is no shelter on the run course. They do a good job of providing ice at the aid stations so take all you can carry!
x2 what Steve said. E-man is brutal heat-wise. And yes, it is really, really easy to push too hard on the bike and under-hydrate. Exactly what I did last year... had the worst half-marathon of my life. Plan for it to be a non-wetsuit legal swim. As Steve said, last year was barely legal... I think within a degree if I remember correctly. The two years prior to that, the swim was a non-wetsuit swim. Swim is in brackish water, and sometimes there are jellyfish, although it is early in the season, so if they are there, there aren't usually too many. I always put on that jellyfish repellent just to be sure.
And yes, it will be hot by the time you get to T2 - I found cooling sleeves to be awesome, as I could shove ice in there. Aid stations always have a lot of ice, and snowcones at the turnaround on the run. One thing to note, even though this is an official WTC race, they do not serve Ironman Perform on the course - it is Gatorade Endurance.
Let's see... what else... course can be very windy, which is another reason it is easy to push too hard on the bike. Otherwise, it is a really great race. Hope we have a big EN contingent there!
Thanks for the advice! I was a little worried about it being flat and pushing myself too hard. I'll make sure I keep it reigned just so I can get through the run in one piece!
Anyone racing Eagleman this weekend and still need a place to stay? I have an extra room at the Hyatt Sat/Sun nights. I need to know ASAP. Email me at kortneyringelphoto@gmail.com.
Kortney Im staying at the Hyatt also! I will be wearing my Jersey Girls (pink/black) kit as I will be racing with a LOT of the women from my tri club. I hope to see you there!
