Hitch rack 1up vs. kuat sherpa

Ok team I am laid up with a bum ankle and what do I do when that happens? SHOP! I am in need of a new hitch rack for my Subaru Outback with a 1 1/4" hitch. I have narrowed it down to the 1up and the Kuat Sherpa. I like both units(though pricey) and am leaning toward the 1Up for two bikes because of durability and the fact that I dont have to strap a wheel down(short trips with the rear disc on). I am a little worried on the tongue weight though. Anybody have any experience with these two racks that can give me some insight?

  • Damon - I know people with the 1up and they love it. One thing to consider is if you will need access to the trunk while your bike(s) are loaded. If so, the Kuat NV or Sherpa is an option. So is the Thule T2 -- http://www.thule.com/en-us/us/products/bike-carriers/hitch/917xtr-t2-_-917xtr.

I tried the NV first and had trouble getting it to cinch tight in one of our hitches. Returned it (thanks Amazon!!), and got the T2. I love that rack. Easy to put on the car. Easy to load up the bikes. Easy to drop it down and access the back of our vehicles when loaded.

Unless you are hauling four "Wal-Mart Special" mountain bikes at 50lbs per, I don't think you have to worry about tongue weight with either of the racks.
  • I have a Thule T2 and it is rock solid. I echo Joe's comments. Best rack I've had. Worth a look before you buy.
  • You can access the trunk with the 1up. It tilts down. I have the 1up quick rack on my Acura and it's awesome. Solid, doesn't touch anything but the tires and very quick mount and installation and removal. Can't recommend it enough.  And looks good against my black car when folded up
  • I have the Kuat NV and really like the rack. It does fold down so you can access the trunk/hatch. I had some initial issues getting it on the car 2012 Subaru Forester and later had the lock cut but in both instances the Kaut customer service was very responsive and helpful. I initially liked having the option for the add on to haul 4 bikes but don't know that I would use it now.
  • I have the 1 UP and absolutely love it. I had another and hated that I couldn't secure my bike with race wheels attached. The 1 UP is solid! My only knock on it is that it is pretty heavy. Not a problem for my but my wife hates installing it because of the weight.
  • Thanks everyone for the insight! My 1up rack was delivered today and after five minutes it was installed. Very impressed so far! Also picked up the simple wheel lock which takes away some of the worry from someone making a quick mad dash with my bike. Thanks again everyone.
