Dehydration/hyponatremia/heat exhaustion?

Hi all,

I have just read the article on managing hydration status. Very informative, but I am still a bit confused as to what my problem is.

I raced Wildflower yesterday. The temp was low 80's. Not extremely hot, I have been training in high 70's for several weeks now. I had a PR Swim, a good bike ( didn't feel I was ever pushing too hard), and the worst run of my entire life.  I walked the majority of the run, felt nauseous and weak from the first mile.  When I finished I became chilled and was observed by friends to have blue lips. No vomiting but just felt bad overall. In the past 2 IMs I HAVE experienced nausea and vomiting about 45min AFTER finishing.

On the bike I took in approximately 212 cal/hr, 300mg Na/hr, and about 32oz water/hr. and about 8 oz of Gatorade. This is the protocol I have always used and have had no problems before. I raced Napa HITs 3 weeks ago with the only change being LESS sodium at Napa and no gatorade at Napa. I have a great day at Napa and won my age group.

I am wondering if this is dehydration, hyponatremia, heat exhaustion or GI shut down???? I seem to have symptoms of all of these. My first thought is hyponatremia but I have not had problems at the 70.3 distance using the exact same nutrition plan.  Could that relatively small amount of Gatorade cause such a big problem? I have stayed away from gatorade in the past. Seems too concentrated for me, but it just "sounded good" at the time.

  • I was hoping to see some responses...was very interested in the possible explanations...of which I have none...I would put this directly to the coaches ( in the microthreads) and see if they have insight/thoughts...
